| Shuts down and stays dead
I just built a new PC about 4 weeks ago.
i have an :
AMD AThlon 64bit3000+
Gigabyte Motherboard K8NNXP
1gig of DDR400 Ram
120gig Seagate
Gexcube R9800XT
Midi Tower with 500W power supply and 2 internal fans(Top and Side panel)
A few time my machine just turned off for no reason, I was able to start it aup again and happened a few times. Yesterday it turned off around 8 o clock at night and i haven't been able to turn it on again, The power button doesnt work, wont turn on. Thinking it was the Power supply maybe blow, i replaced it with a nother and it was working fine for about an hour and then it just shut down again. Once again i the Power button doesnt work. I checked all the connections and they seem to be fine. Everything is where it is supposed toi be but no deal. A friend of mine has the same system as i do and he never has any problems. What could be the problem with this computer? Please help i need help urgently!! |

You sure you've got all your cooling devices situated properly? Thermal protection might be shutting it down and keeping it off. My flatmate's MSI board does that. |

I would definitely check the memory. Some brands of memory are known to not work well with certain motherboard models. Check Gigabyte's web site for a list of compatible memory. Don't go to the memory manufacturer's site, though, because remember: they want you to buy their memory.
I've had some weird, annoying, and disabling stuff happen with my computer and everytime it was the memory. Later I found out that some Centon memory doesn't work at all with some Shuttle motherboards. I wish Circuit City would have told me that before I bought them...would have saved me a lot of headaches. |

Your problem will most likely be 1) the case on/off switch bad, or 2) the PSU has quit working properly.
For #1), try swapping the case reset switch for the case on/off switch...they do the same thing...so, if the power supply is ok, the "new" switch should function just fine, and you can turn the machine on by hitting the reset switch. (you can also remove the connectors from the on/off switch where they connect to the pins on the motherboard and short those two pins with a small screwdriver or something else metal for a test. Be sure to fully disconnect the computer power cord from any power source first).
If this doesn't work, you will need some way to test the PSU with a volt meter.
I doubt your problem is a bad motherboard or CPU...it COULD be a bad, or not plugged in good...stick of RAM. Bad motherboards or CPUs do not work awhile and not work for a time...go and come etc. They are either good or bad...not somewhere in between. |
