Heyas, on saturday my gf has asked me to fix one of her friends computers, she doesn't know a lot about computers so all she was able to tell me was that there are no desktop icons and there is no startbar. I don't wanna go round there and not be able to help so can yous tell me some things that I may be able to try to get this working? Maybe what causes these things? I don't know if they have the internet and I'm not sure what OS is being used.
Any help at all will be much appreciated, I know this seems like a long shot, but I would like to go in with a bit of knowlege of things that I can try rather than having no idea at all.
It sounds like explorer.exe is not loading correctly.
Depending on the os, you might be able to kill it and then restart it.
Safe mode is always a good way to start fixing things up.

I mean if the computer starts up fine in safe mode, there's something crapping the system. In that case, you could start deleting programs or updating the system (like service packs and stuff)
Without knowing the problem more deeper it's hard to suggest anything, even harder when the os is unknown.
