| pox 8RDA+ with AMD 2600 dies under heavy loads
I custom built a computer with the following specs expecting to get 2 gig processing performance, but I have to slow it down to 1.12 in the Bios to get more stable performance, and still it has been crashing.
AMD 2600+
Epox 8rda+
Two 512 Ram sticks (Kingston)
MX440 video card
80 GB HD (IBM)
Zip Drive (Iomega)
CD burner
DVD burner
56k Modem
When I run processor-intense programs (encoding mp3, rendering video) the system crashes. I get a black screen and the power down shuts off without warning. It looks like the power button was pushed, except there is quiet electronic beep emitted from inside the case that doesn’t shut off till I do press the power button.
Fixes attempted:
I borrowed a different brand of Ram and substituted it in. No luck. It seems the system crashes faster though, when it has only 512 Ram instead of 1 gig.
In the Bios, I set the freq to 100 instead of 166. I get fewer crashes when I run at the slower speed, but it still crashes. And who wants to be giving up almost half their processing speed?
Any recommendations? Thanks! |

The most valuable pieces of information in this matter would've been your psu ratings and cooling solutions.
Poor psu can cause that, and also poor cooling. |

I concur with Muno. What specs does the bios show for your 3.3, 5, and 12v rails...positive and negative. I had to RMA a board that was running screwy because the voltages were not being regulated properly. I couldn't run the Barton at 1.65 if I had tried, always too high ( 1.85v ), the 12v positive was running at like 12.88 etc.
The beeping could be from something being misconfigured or a heat warning, so it would be nice to know what temps you've been seeing ( inside and outside of the case ) |

The Case temp is usually around 37 degrees with very little variation. The CPU temp runs from 45 ish to as high as 55. I have noticed it seems to be at the 55ish range that the crashes seem to occur. I'll check on the voltage stuff. I haven't been keeping an eye on that. |

I tried replacing the 300W power supply with a 350W unit last night. It didn't seem to have an impact. The system still blacked out when I tried to run more intense programs. So it doesn't appear to be power supply. Hhmmmm... I'm not sure what to try next. |

Can you post your voltages since the new PSU was installed, the Vcore is worrisome, It's shifting byt .08 volts, may not seem like much, but that's almost a full .1 volt...
I had a PC here that would reboot if the voltage hopped over 1.725v, so I would say that voltage is still your problem, Just a question of how much it's fluctuating now.... |

Most likely the motherboard isn't keeping your power running through your board in check. Had the exact same problem with another board. Ran fine until you tried to play Counter Strike. Replaced the mobo and it's been running with no hiccups ever since. |

The log I pulled the voltage figures from only keeps about two days of data. Would the volt stats from further back be stored somewhere else?
So, possibley PSU, or possibly motherboard. I've also had a suggestion that my video card could be over heating (ASUS V9180 MX440) can the problem. |
