some general tips.
if there is a fuse in your mains plug try changing that. if that doesn't work, then change the power supply for a new one. make a simple diagram to let you know where the wires are to go back to. make sure the mains plug is taken out of the wall socket before you try to change anything. be careful as the edges of the metal pieces inside your pc are often sharp, and you can easily cut youself. |

it is a little difficult because it could be the power supply...or the motherboard...or the cpu.
One thing you can do to try to narrow it down is.....
unplug the power chord from the back of the power supply.
unplug the biggest connector from the power supply to the motherboard..it is called the atx connector...looks like this from the bottom http://lib1.store.vip.sc5.yahoo.com/...sfig2large.jpg
anyway, it is the biggest one coming from the power supply and it goes staright to the motherboard....what you do is unplug it....then you take a paper clip and bend it into a "u" shape"....then you plug one end of it into the hole on the connector where the green wire is at....then you plug the other end into any of the holes where a black wire is at.
Then you plug in the power chord to the back of the supply and see if it powers on...it if dies...then probably the motherboard or cpu is bad...but the supply is ok.
If the power supply DOESNT turn on then...what you need to do is disconnect all the other wires from the supply that are going to the hard drive, cd roms etc etc....disconnect all of them except maybe one going to a fan or one hard drive....then try it again and see if the power supply comes on.....if it comes on then, then it tells you that one of those components is bad and is loading down the power supply to where it wont come on.

If you have checked all your connections and power sources (ie power strip, outlet, etc...) then chances are your power supply is dead and needs replaced. What brand / model is your pc or is it a no name box? |

| actually on an atx supply it should be pretty easy to see where stuff goes...the atx connector can only go in one place and only in one direction....the other 4 wire connectors can go to any conenction..in other words they are the same and can go to cdroms or hard drives etc etc..so its not necessary to put them exactly back where they came from....you might want to pay attention to the little small floppy power connector...because unless you know where it goes it may be hard to find it, lol...cuz its small.
But I just say all this to let you know that you dont have to put the 4 wire conenctors exactly back where they came from...the conenctors to the hard drive, or cdroms etc are interchangeable. |

true enough jp, assuming it is not an at supply, plus the diagram can give a confidence boost to an amateur, and lead to good practices if the amateur decides to do other minor pc repairs/upgrades. |

sounds like an A T power connecter. fit them onto the board so that there r black wires on 1 plug next to black wires on the second plug. did that make any sence at all??? or is 1 of thouse connectors a 4 pin and the other like a 20 pin? if so they will only go in 1 way jus line em up |
