Is My Video Card Broken? :(

Just got a brand new Intel 848p motherboard, brand new 3.2ghz Pentium 4, one brand new 512mb stick of ddr and one brand new 120gb harddrive.

I also had this problem on my old harddrive, I install a brand new copy of windows xp, it works fine except the video is screwed, the windows logo has colored dots all over it along with cmos and in windows the left half of the screen is tinted yellow. When I download the official Radeon 9800 pron driver and install it, when I reboot and load windows back up it crashes every time with the following error in safe mode:

"computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown.
Microsoft Windows detected a possible device failure.

The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation.
please check with the device manuafacturer for a driver update.

The display driver for Radeon 9800 Pro seems to be responsible for system instability."

Help

Screwy video usually means bad card - corrupted bios or bad mem chip contacts
Have you looked in smartgart to see what AGP is enabled?
ATI insist on SP1 update on XP
Some people report success with ATI probs by reinstalling chipset drivers for mobo AFTER card drivers (AGP-PCI)
You must plug in 12V molex to card - and have a damn good PSU
Two ways to crosscheck....
test with dif monitor
test card in dif machine

Catalyst 3.1 (NOT 3.10) seem to be most reliable (way older)
4.6's soon to be out
Have you tried Omega drivers?

The fact that you're seeing the distorted colors in the BIOS and before you get to the OS would lead me to believe your card is hosed.

i agree with rick, sounds like a bad vid card, you can try another vid card in your system, or if you happen to have onboard video, try that? Sucks to have a bad 9800 vid card..how old is the card? did you buy it brand new with the other stuff? Maybe you can RMA it unless bought used.

maybe pull the card, do a close examination of it to make sure no parts are broken and make sure the fan is spinning when running. When you put it back in, push it in to make sure it is seated firmly.

good luck....
