Hello everyone.
Hope this is the right place to post.
Having trouble with a PC, keeps restarting itself over and over.
The hard drive makes some kind of “swoosh noise” and keeps restarting, never loads windows.
Ran Hard Drive diagnostics, no problems found.
Any suggestions? What to try next?
Thank you in advance for any help or leads. |

What version of windows you using?...Have you tried to start in safe mode?...How far does it get before restarting....does it get past bios screen?
A few more details would be helpful

if it is windows xp or 2000 it could be the blaster virus...or maybe even the sasser worm virus.....
you could try to boot to safe mode and run a virus scan....for instance download mcafee stinger and run it...it checks for some of the more popular viruses... http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Steve,
My apologies, I should have given more info.
OS – Win Pro 2000
Can’t boot in safe mode.
Restarts in the very beginning – barely a few seconds. Windows 2000 screen comes on for a few seconds.
Than a split second tiny blue screen flahes, can’t catch what it says – way too fast and than the hard drive or something in the tower near it, makes the “swoosh” noise and its starts over.
Since my first post, tried to run recovery CD, no luck either.
Sorry, I am not a frequent poster, but am having such trouble with this.
Thank you again. |

doesnt sound good, lol....
do you have any spare parts? like a spare hard drive to try and see if it will boot then....
will it boot to a floppy disk?
one thing you could try just to see what happens is to disconnect the hard drive altogether..unplug it and pull the IDe cable...in case the hard drive is shorted and causing the comp to reboot somehow.... |

John,
Thank you for suggestions and help.
I am helping out someone who normally handles PC support, so I don’t know if I would brave swapping parts :-) I will if I have to.
Steve,
PC was working great, not too old yet < 2 years old.
Did have power outages and lightning in the area, but can’t say that is related.
Not a new install of OS.
No new hardware/software added.
Recovery CD attempts to do its job, but than just restarts and keeps doing so.
Pretty much doesn’t respond to anything you try to do.
Support people said they can’t figure out if it hardware or software.
I thought I can get some real life input from you guys.
(see what happens when someone takes a day off :-) )
Thank you much for all/any help guys.

Good Morning,
Just wanted to post a thank you note and an update.
Thank you to everyone who took time to post and help, greatly appreciate it!
Was not able to do anything to make the pc boot.
After installing 2nd OS in a separate directory, discovered that the registry was damaged beyond repair.
Format and clean install of the OS solved the problem so far (did not want to resort to this option, but nothing else worked).
Working good today, hopefully it will stay that way.
Thank you and nice day to all. |

Hi im new to the forum and I've got the same problem except that I got Win XP home with sp2 all the updates as well as norton 2005 installed.
Also instead of computer doing something different when the windows installation disk is inserted it just continues acting as it is. Also after it restarts it gives me the usual options of command prompt, last known good config and normal but it always gets to the windows logo with the loading bar (black blackground) and restarts.
I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out because I don't want to resort to having erase my hard drive as it has all my photos on it without any backup. |
