Errors when booting - HELP!!!

2 days ago my computer just went blank. I tried to reboot and had much trouble. I am running windows 98. What happened when it did boot after 3 tries - It went into surface scan and found bad sectors. This surface scan took over 2 hours to complete. Anyways it seems that there is a bad sector in the first sector that was unable to be fixed. After that was all done I could boot the computer and use it. But when it boots I get 5 or 6 errors that I have to close before I can use my computer. Some errors come up more than once. Today the errors I got were:

Rundll32

Systray along with another box that said "A required .DLL TKNV32R.Dll was not found"

Rundll32

Explorer

Rundll32 anong with another box that said "Error loading powrprof.dll A dynamid link library (DLL) initialization routine failed."

Explorer along with another box that said "Error loading pwrprof.dll"
_________

AND... I can not shut down the regular way. I have to Crtl - Alt - Del -- Shutdown in order to shutdown.

__________

Do you have any clue what this means and how I can fix this problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Kathy

Welcome to the forum! sorry for the drive issues

usually it means the hard drive is dying....you need a new drive....then you either have to reinstall windows from scratch..or use a program like norton ghost to copy the old drive to the new one..and then you might have to reinstall windows over the top of the errors to fix them etc....

the new drives usually come with software to copy drives over to a new drive...but i dont trust any of that software!! I trust norton ghost! There are too many horror stories about people trying to use the western digital or maxtor software etc....

if you have a cd burner now would be a GOOD time to start burning your data and pictures etc onto cd's..cuz that drive could fail at any moment!

Red face

This happens to be the work computer I am having problems with. Our new tech. guy says he can't find anything out about the problem I am having (makes me wonder). His idea is to reinstall Windows. Given what my replys were it seems to me that reinstalling windows won't help. Will I am off to start backing up all my files.

Thanks for the replys to my post.
Much apperciated,
purple

I had this problem and it turned out that i had a virus that was causing it. I got rid of the virus but the damage was still there. I reinstalled windaws and i have been fine.
