Networking Problems

hi guys i need some help last step before reinstalling...

from start I have 3 computers main, spare room, laptop, XP,98,XP

Main has internet sharing other two read internet from it no worries main computer can acces the other two files easy.

but if u try to acces the main computer from the other two access denied or somtihng. but they share the net from it ?? i figure Inter conection sharing. or firewalls or somtihgn but i have removed them and still i cant acces the main from either computers cuase i need to install a printer on other to from this one.
also they need to access files... do i need to reinstall again or what
very confusing..

can anybody help please

Do all of your computers have the same workgroup name?

Have you enabled "file sharing" on the computers and shared drives/folders on each machine?

XP's firewall turned off?

98 login must be identical to XP's.

some of the answer depends on which comp is the sharing one....in other words which one is hooked straight to the internet?

the problem you might be having is that you need the same "workgroup" name on all the comps.....

Xp Home comes with a workgroup name of "mshome"..whereas w98se the workgroup name is "workgroup"....so you should change em all to the same name.....

on Xp you right click "my computer" click "properties"..then click "identification" and you wil see where to change it...

on98 you right click "network neighborhood"..click "properties"..then click "identification" to change it....


also you MIGHT need to have the same account on all the comps....

in other words if the comp hooked to the internet is signed on with the name "bill"...then you need to sign on to the other comps with the name "bill"....sometimes that makes a difference....

also if you want to share any files from the w98 box u have to manually turn on file sharing...right click "network neighborhood"..click "properties"..and youll see 'file and print sharing"....then u can choose what you need etc.


sharing printers is a little more complicated and I am not too experienced with that.....but someone else may chime in if the suggestions I gave dont work...

also..one little snag people have sometimes....the w98 machine CAN NOT have a space in the name of the comp...for instance "joe's comp" wont work....but "joescomp" should work...so check that out also..xp doesnt like spaces in the name of the comps....
