cd burner is acting up please help

Hey guys I am running Windows 2000 and I recently realized that it wasnt reading my cd burner drive. I opened up my computer and changed most of the connections around to see what i get. When it was connected to the same IDE as the hard drive it would crash after 30 minutes. When it was connected to the other IDE it would be fine but a message would come and say that I unplugged a device improperly then both of my cd drives E: and F: would be gone. When I left the burner unconnected with nothing attached the computer runs fine with no problems. Do I have to purchase a new burner or is this a software issues. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance

Have you tried removing the other CD drive and running the system with just the hard drive and burner on separate cables? If it still fails in this situation, I think it is a hardware issue - maybe it couldn't take the heat any more.

Most retail chains have good return policies on hardware... if you buy one and it turns out that it doesn't fix the problem, you can always take it back to most places.

I will try running the burner on its own but I'm losing hope. What does a good burner cost these days. I havent bought one in years

Burners are fairly inexpensive now, it would probably be a good upgrade anyways from an old burner. Usually runs about 30 bux for a burner, or with rebates 10~20

you werent doing this with the system on were you?

i would recomend trying a different ide cable if you have one and also checking the jumpers on the drives

no the computer was off and power cord unplugged
