| How Do You Do An OS Reinstall WITHOUT
REFormatting ?
Would the SW added and Files survive a Reinstall from all the recovery Disks or OS disks --or would I have to reistall 3rd party SW and my Files?
You know a lot of junk just piles up on a Computer with time --and I don't want to do a FDISK n Format Re-stall untill I have time to clean up the machines. Easier to bacl up everything for now.
The point is not to need the Backup, because files need Apps, and I don't want to go searching and download and configuring etc..

WIN98SE

That won't help if the windows install is screwed.
Most versions of windows allow you to install to a different directory, so do that.
Also, if it's a recovery disk, then it WILL wipe the hard disk, partition it to the factory settings and then re-image it.

you can install from a windows disk without formatting....if its 98 or ME then you can just boot to windows and go to the cdrom and click "setup"
if its xp you boot from the cd and hit enter as if you were doing a fresh install..then it sees that you have windows installed already and asks if you want to repair that install, you choose "R" (not the first "R" on the first screen, that is the recovery console...hit "enter" there instead...so choose the next "R")
also, some restore cds give you an option for re-formatting..they ask if you want to just reinstall the system files without formatting or if you want to format

hmmm on winxp and 2k you can also do the same, on win2k and winxp there an option wherein you can choose to do reinstall or fix or something like that, and there is an option wherein you can reformat your hardrive just play with it and you will see i am talking about

As has been said though, if it's an issue with corrupted or missing files, you can just install over the top of it. |
