Speakers not working after switch

I recently switched my speakers to my friend's computer, and his speakers to my computer.

His computer was bought from Gateway and the speakers came with the computer. They're Boston Acoustic speakers, but I'm not too sure of the model.

My computer was built "custom" by another friend of mine and is currently running Windows 98SE. The speakers I gave him are working just fine on his computer.

The speakers I took from him are putting out the correct static sound when switched to "test", but if I want to play music then no sound can be heard.

Any suggestions?

What kind of speakers are the new ones that your using....and are they just stereo speakers, or is it a surround sound unit?

Well it's supposed to be surround sound. There are two speakers and a subwoofer.

That's not surround, it's 2.1. Are you sure they're plugged into the right output on your soundcard? Should be plugged into the green jack.
