| Presario EZ 2200 wont boot
I was at my tax mans office today and we got to talking about how to speed up his pc on his desk , I suggested more RAM as he only has 64 mb. We talked awhile and he mentioned he had a Compaq EZ 2200 at home that wouldn't start. So being the guy who likes a challenge , I got it from him . You plug it in , turn it on, I hear/feel a fan running, but nothing else .I tried to look up the serial # on compaqs website to get specs but nada. Its in a case thats kinda strange too, the whole thing is blue plastic on the outside with removable panels, never saw anything like it . But aaaanyway time to get out the screwdrivers and get to it.Time to start taking things off! If anybody knows about these things let me know.
Ok , swapped out the ram, changed the ram into the other slot.
Unhooked ide cables and power cables to hd and both cd drives.
Has onboard video, I dont know if it can be disabled but I tried another pci vid card anyway. It doesn't even give that post beep,
I'm gonna pull the board out and put it on cardboard with the power hooked up ,see what it does. The ps DOES come on and the light gives a little test detection flicker on the drives when they are hooked up. But I'm leaning toward the board might be grounding.
The board does have a sticker on it that says Prowler W/1394, and is a pga 370 socket.

Well I think it's fried , tried to start it up on a piece of cardboard. Same thing. I was looking at it closely to see if I could see anything. I did find it finally on Compaqs site. There's these little black things on the board, some of them look swollen , some like they got hot. Heres a pic of the board, well um sorta, got it off compaqs site. What are these little things?I wonder what a replacement board would cost?

If they are shaped like cylinders they appear to be capacitors. It's hard to tell without seeing an actual picture. A capacitor will have 2 leads. They come in different values of micro, nano, or pica farad (sp). Micro farad looks like a backwards Y...a number value...then an F. They look like this....

You're probably right, they are cylinder shaped, I can't read the values on them though. I got on the 1-800 compaq, got transferred to another outfit that sells their parts , can you believe it? They want $378 for a new board, $178 for a refurb each with a 180 day warranty. The outfit was pcpartfinders.com , interesting that compaq would shift me off to someone else. I wonder who REALLY made this board? If it would fire up I could get the bios , but if it would fire up , I wouldn't be looking for a new board! LOL |

Some type caps look to be swollen and are no the problem, but it you can see residue coming out of them or they are spliting than they are definately bad. Have you tried just booting without the mem to see if you get an error beep code? Also if you have another ps around you might want to try it, I've seen drive lights blink and fans run but the power was not corect on the mobo. |

Hey MDS , where in Kansas?
I will look around and get an atx ps to try on it before I completely condemn it. |

How are you coming with this box? Is the board dead?
I do have a board for one of the EZ2200 computers. |
