| endless reboot problem
I have a Asus A7V8X-E Deluxe motherboard with an Athlon XP 3200 Barton core processor and 2x512 MB - 400mhz RAM, a Radion 9800 Pro video card - 256 MB VRAM, and a Pinnicle video capture card. I also have two Western Digital serial ATA hard drives (250 Gig capacity each) set to Raid 0 (striped). I have been trying to load windows XP Pro as the only OS, with Microsoft Office XP and Pinnicle 9.1 video editing software and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 (basic). I have a Sony 52x32x52x CD burner and a Sony DRU-530 DVD burner. I have a 400 watt power supply.
Here is the problem: I can boot the computer up normally and when loading the operating system, it loads with no trouble. I can also load all the updates from windows update web site with no trouble. At different points of loading the other software, when I reboot the computer, it goes through post just fine and starts loading the operating system just fine. Just as the Windows XP spash screen finishes it's thing and right before the log on screen comes up, the computer starts the boot process all over again. and it will keep cycling throught the boot process over and over again unless I load to safe mode or manually shut it down. I can boot to safe mode with no trouble. I have nuked the hard drives and loaded all over again from scratch 6 or 7 times and I get the same result. The only difference is the point of loading the software varies when this all starts.
If I let the computer set to cool off over night, it still does the reboot thing. So I know it is not thermal. I replaced the mother board with a known good board, of the exact same make and model and got the same result too. I also flashed the updated bios (version 1011). No change.
If anyone can give me any thoughts of what to look at I would be gratefull. It is driving me crazy! |

Welcome to the forum!
I would say its this "Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 (basic). "
there are well known issues with that and XP..they have patches to fix it
I bet if u try it all the way thru without ezcd creator 5 you wont have the reboot issues.

The only problem is that it has started the boot problem even before I loaded Roxio on three of the instances it occured.
Twice all I had loaded was Windows XP Pro and all the updates and Microsoft Office XP and it started the boot problem as I was finishing the updates of office.

then youll have to meticulously keep track of what is installed and do reboots after installing each and every driver etc...to see what is killing it.
also there are log files to look at..the system event logs etc...maybe they will have a clue |

i had a boot problem recently. it would work for a while then reboot for no reason and then stay on for days. sometimes it would reboot itself 10 times a day. turned out it was the power supply. i changed it out and its been going constantly for a month now. |
