hello all this is my first post, great forum. I recently had the sasser B virus and a trojan horse irc /backdoor.sdbot.35.k which my AVG antivius found and healed. I tried to run quick restore cd (I have a presario Notebool/XP) and the CD-ROM wont read anything. The device manager indicates there is no probems, however when I run a compaq diagnostics check there is sequenntial - read error 066003001 and 06004001, any ideas???
Thankyou in advance

Check and see if any other cds work... if not, I would think that the hardware's probably failed?? Does the cd rom even pick up in My Computer? I would see in the Device Manager if you can remove the IDE drivers and let them re-install and see if that makes any diff, if not, I reckon the virus has done some weird *deleted* to ya system files.. I had a similar problem with a DVD drive a while back. When I inserted a DVD or CD it started up (the drive) and then it sounded like it was dying. The lights were on, the system detected the drive, and everything worked according to XP. However, sure enough, it was a bad DVD drive. Plus it just stopped working. The night before it was fine, and I turned on my computer the next day and no dice. I would have to say faulty hardware. Also, if you hear that the cd-rom drive is kind of slowing down, then thats exactly what you've got. |

This sounds like your laser is failing in your rom - i had a similar problem with my DVD rom - it would read music and stuff but not dvd's - The drive was still in warranty luckily and the store told me the problem was the laser needed replacing !! Oh well - remember just because its new doesnt mean it will work ! Good luck
**Just a point - Buy a new rom , dont try to mess around with them as they are so cheap nowadays mate-the most trouble i go to is using a disc cleaner - if that fails -bin it --- But do also suspect software failure---**

You might try upgrading the firmware, and checking out the laser cleaner idea. I was about to tell you that on any given Sunday, you can get a CD burner for $10-$15 after MIR, but then I reread your post to see it was a laptop: not so cheap to replace.
Either way, I wouldn't get the replacement from HP/Compaq if I could avoid it. Find a reputable dealer on Ebay with good feedback and cheap shipping, selling new only. Now might be a good time to upgrade to a nice combo drive...
Welcome to TechIMO, BTW.
