Small volume issue

I can't get it loud enough to hear it. I've tried everything, even installed a SB PCI card thinking that it must be my onboard sound is lacking...not it. My speakers are just little polk audio without any sort of volume control on them but they work perfectly with my comp downstairs. I've gone into my control panel and of course start, programs and looked at the master volume control. They are all up on the highest yet I can barely hear anything...guessing there has to be something I'm over looking...anyone?

You aren't using amplified speakers... that's your problem. Most higher end speakers (even a $20 pair I saw at Best Buy a few days ago) comes with an electric outlet plug to add power to the speakers, thereby allowing them to amplify the signal from the PC and make the sound VERY loud. Those polk speakers likely came with an HP that has a special amplifying sound card (which is why the sound can be turned up louder on that PC - it has a card that will amplify for you so the speakers don't need the additional power plug). Go out and buy a cheap set of amplified speakers and replace the polks - it will fix your volume problems.
