| Mouse Double Clicks with one click
heyas, just these last couple of days my mouse has been doing what double click does with just one click
every 4 or so clicks one of them is bound to perform the action of a double click
like if i go to desk top and click my computer with 5 second intervals between each click, one of them will open up my computer
its annoying as sometimes it will close 2 windows i have open at once when i click the X
my mouse is a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical
Is there anything that i can do or is my mouse screwed? |

I just ran into this problem with one of my Dell piece of junk mice (the ones that come with their new computers). Every 10 clicks or so it would double click even when I'd only single click. Turned out the mouse itself was bad (the switch inside was flipping two times and signalling the computer that I had double clicked when I had not). Replacing the mouse itself fixed the problem. I'm now using a VERY old Compaq PS/2 2 button mouse that has never done me wrong and it works great. |

If the new mouse doesn't help, remember you can always return it to the store you bought it from as long as they have a good return policy! |

The problem is the micro-switch the button you mash on the mouse activates...on older mice, this switch will wear badly and make contact on the downward move and again on the upward move..thus generating two clicks...sometimes it's simply 'dirty', and the switch cannot make a good contact each time due to dirty contacts inside.
I had a 'favorite' older mouse a couple of years ago that started that crap.. I disassembled the thing and got some tuner cleaner from Radio Shack..sprayed down the shaft some and pumped the switch many times..did that over and over...finally I put the mouse all back together again..and I guess I managed to get some cleaner inside the switch..it worked great after that..until it just quit alltogether...and I retired it. |

So I can't remember any kind of mouse where it hasn't started developing this double click during a one click press problem. Right now I have a Logitech M-RAA93 mouse which cost at the time $40. I'm sick an tired of all these mice developing this characteristic. I cannot take it back or do a warrenty because it's probably expired already. Anyway, are there any mice that will actually work right and last longer than 1 - 2yrs.?? I am left handed so I'd like to get a unisex mouse fyi.
Thank for your help.

It's the mouse - see Bovon's reply, Oct. 2001.
It happens to all mice when they age. The mouse has to be replaced.
Don't pay extra for a premium mouse - it will eventually develop the same problem. Buy 3 or 4 inexpensive, scroll wheel, optical mice at NewEgg.com or similar hardware discounter. They cost $3.99 to $4.99. That way you will always have a backup when the problem occurs again - and you will save shipping costs. |
