| Doom 3 exiting to desktop after random time (usually less than a minute)
Just got Doom 3, and when I go in to the game it just exits to desktop (last sound skips as it closes). Looking in event viewer there's an application error, but it shows no info on the error. It just shows this:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 7.
My system:
Athlon XP 2600+ Barton oced to 2.2ghz
1gig pc3200 kingston ddr
Abit NF7-S
Radeon 9600pro (with 4.7 catalyst)
120gb WD SE hd
Sony dvd drive
Sony cdrw drive
I'm just wondering if my graphics card is messed up. Some other games have been crashing out saying the faulting module is atioglxx.dll (or something like that). Also others have closed to desktop like Doom 3 does. And some of the games that have been crashing didn't used to crash before. |

Is your graphics card overclocked? Doom 3 doesn't like overclocked graphics cards, you could even try underclocking it, I know this fixes another graphic glitch some people have reported. |

I was having an issue with Doom 3 and some other games, i have a 9600 as well. what you should check is you advanced settings for your card. go to the SMARTGART tab and turn "fast write" off. if that doesnt help maybe try turning the AGP speed down to 4x. |

The vid card has no fan on it in the first place. Tried turning off fast writes and still crashed. Will have to try changing AGP speed to 4x tomorrow night. |

Check to see if you have fast writes enabled in your BIOS. |

crash to desktops are often caused my memory errors. If messing with all those video card settings doesn't help, you should try either relaxing the timings, or bumping up the vdimm one notch. |

Maybe it's your driver, I've had similar behavior with doom3, ( Application errors - BSOD )
I was using the omega adaption of the catalyst drivers, which seemed to be causing my problems.
Specs
Pent IV - 3Ghz
512 Mb Ram
Radeon 9800 XT
I deinstalled the driver, booted up in safe mode and used the ati cleaning tool, http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/m...lystutils.html
rebooted uninstalled the omega setup/install files. After that I installed the latest ati driver and upgraded directx to the latest version just in case and lo and behold I had no problems anymore. Performance seems ok.
if you still should have problems you could try the beta driver release ( catalyst 4.9 ) from ati, should increase performance and framerate's specially for doom3 http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4547.html
( but it's still beta - so your mileage may vary ) I personally haven't installed it yet.
Good Luck
Best Regards

Well I got in my evga 6800GT this weekend, put it in, started doom 3, and what do you know it closed to desktop again. Well last thing I could think of I set the FSB/multiplier back to default (11.5x166 vs. 11x200) and what do you know it starts working alright.
Crazy thing is that setup used to work great in games that were recently crashing. I think I seen before that mobos would sometimes not hold the agp frequency or something down when overclocking could it be that the mobo has gotten like this over time?
If thats true then I'm starting to not like this NF7-S anymore. First the onboard ethernet quits working (during a LAN party I might add), and now this. |

No, most likely its just an unstable overclock. Have you tried prime95 with your OC? |
