| Windows Xp fatal error unmountable_boot_volume
I have been trying to help someone get their Windows XP back up and running. When you turn the computer on it will start to boot up then you get the fatal blue screen that says STOP unmountable_boot_volume and locks up. I have tried booting from the CD and it's like the computer won't even acknowledge the CD Rom. I have tried changing the boot order to boot the CD Rom first and it still didn't work. I have gotten into the utilities section from F12 and ran all of those tests from there and I keep getting the following errors; Error Code 0F00:133D Msg: IDE device failed Incompatible CD for testing, Error Codes 0F00:0244 & 0F00:1A44 Msg: block 6630849 uncorrectable data error or media is write protected. I also came up with these error messages during another test, Error Code 1100:0226 Msg: Anuncorrectable cyclic redundance check (crc) or error code correction (ecc) data error occured on the media at Cylinder:0002 Head:00 sector:01. I got the same message with the error codes 1100:0326 & 1100:0426 at cylinders:0000 head:00 sectors: 01 to 19. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am afraid I'm going to have to format the hard drive and start all over. Thanks |

you probably need to format, you could mount their harddrive in another computer to see if it even works anymore. after seeing those CRC errors it kinda sounds like their Harddrive failed and died completely |

I suspect a "F6" driver is missing, is it on an add-on card? |

You know, when you are on the text-mode install, and it asks to press F6 to install third party drivers, this is a common solution to that problem. |

just so you know, in this scenario reinstalling will be the easiest of all the solutions, however, you are probably going to have to repair your hard drive first. It looks like you have might have bad sectors on your hard drive.
First I would boot to the XP CD and choose the recovery console...when It loads DOS type "FIXBOOT" and let it rewrite your boot sectors, If this doesnt work you could run hard drive diagnostics tools.
If you dont have any Ive got some pretty good ones I could get to you

Don't forget to run "fixmbr" and "chkdsk" on the drive too if you are going to be in the recovery console anyway... |

From what she has told me the computer has had no add-ons. All she has done is updated XP with the patches from Microsoft but she also said she installed an "adaware" program. I figure that might have been part of the problem originally but since I'm just receiving the errors I listed earlier the hard seems to be more of the problem. |
