Vieo card. Everytime I have seen that the video died. Last one was everytime the guy would dial internet it would drop and mon would say -refresh out of range (voodoo3). Replaced video-works fine. To elaborate your ramdac controls the refresh rate. It goes above or below your monitors and the mon will shut off so to speak so it doesnt blow. The mon is responding as it should to a out of range input. The video card is just giving it some funky refresh rates when it feels like it.

So couldnt i just buy a monitor that can handle higher refresh rates? rather than spending money on a video card that works awesome 3/4 the time?

No, even a higher refresh monitor wont help. Cause the video card is outputting odd refresh rates that arent normal. Is the card new? If so it shouldnt cost you more then shipping it back. You could test the mon on another system to be sure- or the video for that matter. Im pretty sure though your gonna find its the video at fault not the monitor. One thing though-have you checked the monitor cord? Try moving it when signal drops-see if it has any effect. Sometimes the cord wears out where it bends so much at vga card.

Everything is less than two weeks old, just built this system from newegg, so I'm pretty sure the cord isnt going bad.

My CTX PL-9 (19") monitor was new and cord was bad 2nd week I had it -LOL. It just depends. My bet is on the card though.
