question about a win ME machine, about 3 yrs old; hard drive 21 gig with only 400 mb free;-running very slow-
removed lots spyware ;
now a worse problem:
when restart, it hangs at the win me screen, and if you hit escape, it says something to the effect of- windows is updating system configuration files, this may take several minutes, please wait-;but it doesn't advance from that point even after 10-15 minutes and just hangs;
one time after computer was off for 3 hours or so it did after a few mnutes get through this sequence and loaded normally to windows;but again after a restart it repeated the sequence and hangs at win me welcome screen, hit escape and see same message asking you to wait for updating system configuration files -but just hangs up and wont proceed past this point;tried to load to safe mode and same problem.
appreciate any thoughts
Thanks |

I'm not too sure about your specific problem, but you REALLY need to update that OS. Don't even think twice about it. Just upgrade it. My pref is Win 2k, but XP is not bad at all. Also, a bigger hard drive wouldn't hurt. Like dax basically said, you need more space (relates to the speed). Hope this helped... |

I held off here, because I thought "change your OS" would sound discouraging. But the other contributors have beat me to it, lol.
Maybe we need to know your system spec first.
Cpu, ram, Vga chip & ram, HDD size, etc.
My number one pet hate is WinME, but my number two is the customer who brings in their 233mmx with their next door neighbours XP loaded & ask "how do I make it go faster?" answer: "Remove XP!" (OK. Slightly extreme example- only saw that one three times per week).
I'm amazed how many POS ME machines have been turned into sweet running little PCs by going BACK to Win98SE. In fact, i refer to ME as a downgrade from 98SE, or "the half-finished OS"
Ultimately, there's a perfect OS for every spec of machine. Give us a hint...... |

"hard drive 21 gig with only 400 mb free;-running very slow-

Sounds like maybe when removing the "spyware" you might have removed certain files that win ME needs... also only having 400 MB free ....clean up the HD or add some things to anther HD....
maybe if you don't want to "update" your OS, you might want to run a repair on your system first to see if that might work...not familiar with win ME, but heard alot of bad things about it....

I have a PC at the moment that I am fixing for a friend and it had problems loading Windows ME also and once loaded it was very slow. It is a Dell make so I have upgraded him to XP and a new drive. All working fine.
You don't really want ME on your machine trust me.
Just get XP home eddition or win 2000 |
