| Problems with SATA hard drive
A friend of mine has recently assembled a system to spec. But there is a problem with his hard drive...
Caviar Hard Disk Drive Se 40gb Sata150 7200rpm 8mb
When he powers up, the bios recognises it, but when he tries to install Windows XP pro, it says theres no hard disk.
any suggestions?
any other details needed please ask |

You need to install the SATA drivers. When first loading Windows it will ask if you have SCSI or other drivers to install. If yes press F6. Press F6 then it will load a little more Windows then it will ask you to insert the floppy with the SATA drivers. Insert the disk and press OK. |

his mobo is
gigabyte ga-k8vt800 pro
and Jarhed he can't load windows because it isn't installed. The mobo didn't come with any drivers apperently.
so the solution is RAID Controller? |

Well, the mobo hopefully supports SATA drives. If it does, it would normally come with SATA drivers on a floppy. |

if he has the mobo cd theres probably an sata controller on it that u can extract to a floppy.
then at the very beginning of xp pro setup...........u hit F6 when prompted.
then stuff the floppy in the drive when prompted.
done.
i'll have a look for that controller in case u can't find it on the cd |

As said, when Windows' setup asks to hit F6, do so (hit it a few times to be sure), and insert the drivers. Windows, then, should install normally. |

That motherboard supports SATA. He has to start the windows install process. Then at the beginning of the install Windows will ask if there are SCSI or other drivers to install. Press F6 and a little later it will ask for a floppy with the SATA drivers on it. Insert the floppy and press ok. This will load the SATA drivers and then Windows will recognize the SATA drive. The SATA drivers should be on the cd. Look for them in a folder, maybe called floppy or SATA drivers, and put them on a floppy. |
