ok..was it working fine before and now just stopped working??
if so..one thing you can do is boot into safe mode..then go to system restore and restore it back to before the problem started
go to programs/accesories/system tools/restore"Even a fool is thought to be wise if he is silent"

then try this....
boot to the xp cd
1st screen hit enter
2nd screen hit f8 for license agreement
3rd screen hit (R) for repair
this is known as a "repair install"...usually fixes most problems and you wont lose any data etc"Even a fool is thought to be wise if he is silent"

I think the CD Key should be on a label on your CD cover or manual.

system specs would help...also, if the above help doesn't do it for you, then what did you do between when it was fine and when it stopped working. What mobo do you have? I've had personal experience with a certain mobo, and while this probably isn't your problem, it'd be a good thing to eliminate so you don't go on a wild goose chase for info...

is it a bios password?
if it is a bios pasword there should be a cmos reset jumper next to the battery...you move it over to the "reset" position for a few seconds..then move it back
not sure of any other kind of password.....
any way you can call the place where you bought it?
tell us EXACTLY where you are encountering the password..is it after it is booting to the cd?"Even a fool is thought to be wise if he is silent"

Last time I had "Safemode every boot", someone had ticked something in MSConfig on the boot.ini file. Can't remember exactly. It's a long time ago (using W2k ATM) "Safeboot" ?? Something like that.
Anyway, it seemed to be designed to default to safe mode every boot, so you could remove virii, etc.Last edited by Valtelino; September 10th, 2004 at 03:53 AM.

Sometimes when things get "reset" it asks for a password just to confirm that there *isn't* a password. Have you tried getting to that point, then just pressing "OK" or Enter. Just leave it blank. If it got reset, it'll go.

You are either hanging on an app that can't start or hardware that is being improperly configured when you attempt normal boot - at least that is how I would read your symptoms.
Did you install any software or make any hardware changes before this problem started?
You might try running msconfig from safe mode (in the run command). From there you could look at items in the startup tab to see if there are any "foreigners". Another tool you might download and install is regsupreme. Run it and let it fix the errors it finds.
Failing any progress, I would start on hardware issues by first disabling the network card and then try rebooting normally.
You will need attempt to isolate this one issue or possibility at a time and continue that effort until you have isolated a prime suspect.WHUT?
