how can I tell if the mother board requires the extra 4 pin power wires?
| cuz there will be a socket for them...its a smallish square socket with 4 square looking holes
what motherboard is it?
also..you dont need most of the wires from the case to boot up....you really only need the power switch wires....the others arent needed for actual booting up
make sure you have the one marked "power" or "pwr" going to the right pins on the motherboard...usually you can look at the motherboard with a flashlight and those pins are labeled ..might be labeled as "pwr" or "pwr sw"

it doesn't require the extra power connector but I just can't seem to get the power switch or the lights in the front to work |

well, like I said..dont worry about any lights. leds etc
strip it back down..take the motherboard back out of the case....
take off all the ide cables...unplug the power from all the hard drives/cdroms
use only the cpu/heatsink/cpu fan......ONE stick of ram...and a video card unless it has onboard video....of course u need the power supply
that is ALL you need to boot
if it wont boot then..well that is another story....but you need to strip it down to narrow down the possible problems...otherwise you will chase your tail for 10 more hrs

>the case came with no manual and a plethora of wires for the front switches and lights
can you identify which cable is the one that is connected to the power swtich?
it should say POWER SW (sometimes abbreviated PW SW) or POWER ON/OFF...not to be confused with any marked as POWER LED, etc. |

lots of times what happens is that the motherboard is shorting out or slightly touching the case somewhere....to find out what you do is take the board back out of the case and try booting it outside of the case...what you do is strip out all the extra cards like nics/sound cards/modems etc....get it down to just cpu/heatsink..one stick of ram..vid card......take th emotherboard out of the case and set it on the motherboard box on the antistatic packaging......
| Just wanted to point out that you should NEVER set your motherboard or cards on the outside of your antistatic bag... ONLY the inside is "antistatic",... the outside is usually metallic and can cause shorts... not ALL bags are this way but most Mobo bags are... its best to just set it on the bare cardboard...

if you go to the manual and look on page 27 it shows a nice close up of the power switch connection
it is labeled "pwrbt" for "power button"....that is where the switch from the case plugs onto...and it doesnt matter on that one which way it plugs......and if you take the board out of the case what you will need to do is short these 2 pins together briefly with a flatblade screwdriver to make it boot |

susp led??? why are you messing with leds??? if it wont boot it has NOTHING to do with leds!! lol
(I doubt your board has anywhere to plug that led anyway..so it will just hang loose)
