Installing
Running XP Prof and I cannot seem to install new drivers for hardware in normal mode. The installer freezes when searching for software. I have to install in safe mode. It's ok with most things but I have two pieces of hardware (a printer and a webcam) that wont be recognised by the computer in safe mode. It tells me they are unknown devices, therfore I dont seem to be able to install the correct drivers.
Can anyone help.

Can you manually install the drivers?

Usually, you have to install the drivers first, then plug in the hardware. It should be recognized and installed. Is this not happening ????

with some printers and webcams...as Pickel said..you have to run the install program from the disk first..and THEN wait till it asks you to conenct the printer or webcam...
see if you can go into device manager and delete anything with a yellow exclam by it....
then run the install disk for the printer and wait till it prompts u to connect it up...."Even a fool is thought to be wise if he is silent"

Thanks everyone but:!
This freezing happens everytime I install something. Anything!
I have deleted all the yellow exclamations in the device manager. They come back again.
Done all the normal obvious things but can get passed the installer window stage.
How do you install manually?

Click on the device in device manager, and choose update drivers, then choose the option to install from a specific location., where you choose the directory with the drivers.
This prolly wont work as you seem to have something happening with windows, if it prevents all installs.

You know Rootstonian, I was doing some thinking today while riding my motorcycle. If you really want to protect yourself, get something like virtual box (free) and Ubuntu desktop and install chrome...
