There must have been something strang in the operating system. He powered down,AC power, and then restarted and everything is ok.
Is it possible to install a second hard drive and make a image of the system drive on the second hard drive? He wants to be able to backup the entire drive.

Yes, it is possible to do that. You can use Norton Ghost to make the full disk backup. Many hard drives (Western Digital and Maxtor both, I know) come with a drive imaging / copying software program in all retail drive kits. This will do the same thing as Ghost in most cases (unless you have a really odd setup with Linux / OS/2, WinNT, and SPARC all on the same drive or something).
