this is not a problem of mine but of a friends and i just remebered it so i wanted to see what the answer was. my friend got a hand my down emachines (piece of junk) anyway he just uses it for internet and aim. anyway if he turns off the computer it turns off, i dont see a pattern but for no reason it starts itself up BY ITSELF, this can happen 3 or 4 times with the power plug in the computer so whats the reason for this????

The computer thinks that it needs to turn on.
It could be that there's a wake on LAN or modem function that's on and triggering the issue. Could also be a problem with the motherboard or power supply. |

is the power plug grounded or is it connected to a three prong-two prong adaptor or ungrounded? i know from experience that mine would sometimes turn on by itself if on an ungrounded outlet. also, it would turn on any time i touched the metal part of the case.... |

it is a thing in the bios that says when the pc has been off for a certian amount of time or on a certian time eg 3 pm etc it will start up. it is just a simple processes of jumpin into your bios and turning it off |

make sure in the bios, none of the following are enabled
power on by mouse
power on by keyboard
power on by lan
power on by evil chipmunks
etc... . Personally I use the power on by mouse and keyboard,
I think thats so... dandy . Just move the mouse and power your PC on
Anyways, check that stuff, and if it dosent fix it, change the outlet its in and change the powersupply. And make sure the lil red or black switch on the back of the power supply on the back of the computer hasnt been switched over. forget which one its exposed to be on. |

I'd turn on power on by evil chipmunks, my mobo has this feature and i really like it!! Anyway...... i like the bad power supply, might check the power switch header on the mobo, make sure they are pluged up right, make sure the power switch on the case is not stuck or something weird like that.

I third (fourth?) the power supply. Those things are equipped with a POS power supply. I would also look at the motherboard to see if there are any swolled capacitors and such. Than can also cause the machine to act oddly in that manner.
