It might not be recognized properly depending on the configuration, but no permanent damage.
Why do you ask, are you having problems???

Your drive should be fine...are you having issues when setting the jumper to Master? You are connecting the single drive to the end of the IDE cable, right? |

No need to feel stupid, common mistake. Try setting the jumpers on the back of both drives to CS (Cable Select). |

If you can avoid having your CD ROM (ATAPI device)and your hard drive (IDE) on the same cable, please do so...your hard drive has a much faster data transfer speed than your CD ROM...do you have another cable that you can use to connect your CD ROM to your secondary IDE channel as master? That would be your best setup with 2 devices.
You shouldn't feel stupid at all...we've all made mistakes and learned from them. Just think, next time you see somebody on this forum with a question about where to connect their devices and how to set the jumpers, you can hop right in and give them some help!

It should be fine, yes. Just remember to connect your hard drive to the end of the cable, not the middle. See if your hard drive has a "single drive" setting as well. We'll be here if you need more help...no worries. |
