has anyone else got this?
Just wondering a friend of mine asing sbc dial up. Can't afford dsl or cable. She got a bill on her phone for some uk or out of county phone calls. The phone co said she is making them from her phone and she said she wasn't and they would take them off this time, but not again? This happen a couple of months in a row. She has no kids at home, I was wondering if any one has heard of this before?

Has she looked at where the numbers are going in the UK? Has she checked her modem settings to make sure it is not dialing the UK?
Does she keep her computer turned off when she is not on the internet? I dont know what it could be. I have not heard of any spyware or virus or anything that would automaticaly dial your modem. Weird."Life moves pretty fast, if you dont stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it." -FB

I have heard of a lot of spyware that can use your phone to dial out. I'd suggest downloading Spybot Search and Destroy, http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html, and Ad-Aware, http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/, to check for these little bastards plus a lot of other nasties.
Your friend can dispute the charges with her phone company if she didn't make the calls. I'd also report these alls to the phone company and her states Consumer Protection Advocacy program so they can look into pursuing whoever is using her modem for this purpose.
Oh also, it's a good idea to run a firewall even with dial-up. A decent free one, IMO, is ZoneAlarm, http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
Good luck to her
