HP compaq laptop boot problems

Howdy, I Have A HP Compaq laptop which you can probly tell from the title.(hahaha)
It has a P4 aprox1gb ram cd/dvd drive and is running win xp pro sp1 I have never had a problem with the thing untill this morning I started it up it turns on goes through the boot screens but when I get to the login screen and login it starts to load (loading personal settings)then it blinks to my desktop and all of the sudden it starts logging off and puts me back into the login screen has anyone encontered this before any help is greatly appreciated thanks Ed

are there any other accounts listed on the login screen that you can try?

Try going into safe mode (press F8 before the Windows loading screen appears) and accessing your profile there. If it does it there go into the Administrator profile and see if the profile is corrupt or if there is a virus or something. DO you have a virus checker?

O.K. I started my computer and went into safe mode and I got to the log in screen and tried to boot into my only account (and yes do to my arogence at being the only one who uses the machine) the administrator account was what I used and even in safe mode It started to load and in seconds went to logging out and put me right back into the login screen I know it is not a power issue since it does not shut off it just goes back to login screen and yes I have norton anti virus installed but I cannot run it since I cannot even log into my computer Any Ideas I will try and as you can probley guess I do not have a backup of my computer at all so I will try everything Untill I give up wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install but that is the last thing I want to do Thanks for the reply and please keep them coming If I don't respond soon please forgive I am Trying to get this thing working and I have to go up stairs to check the forum Thanks again Ed

Well after doing a quick google search it seems that you are not the only one with a similar problem. Others have reported the same issue after they ran spyware removal tools and virus checkers. In any case here's what you can do:

Using the windows XP cd, boot off the cd and do a REPAIR installation (will be an option after all the drivers are loaded). Let it run its course with the repair and hopefully that will fix your problem. Doing a repair WILL NOT make you lose any documents or files that you have created. It simply re-install's window's system files.
