Question
Lost Data on CD-R

Ok, here is the situation. A user on my network came to complaining about not being able to open a file off of a CD-R that i had burned about a year or so ago. He was getting a cannot open read only file. I could not get it to work on his computer so i brought it over to mine to see what i could do. The CD was full and had several directories on it. When i put it into my computer, i saw the directory structure, but when i went into one of the directories, there were no files. I tried this with all of the directories and they had no files when just a moment earlier they were filled with excel files. Win explorer still shows the CD as being full of data but if i do a properties on a directory it shows 0 bytes.

What happened??? Is the CD bad? I tried it in two other computers with the same results. Is there a way that i can recover the data? It is a namebrand CD-R disc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you didn't already, try reading it in the drive it was burned with... Just an idea...

Can you see the directory and files using the good old DOS or command prompt?

If you can copy everything over to the hard drive, you may have to play around with the attributes to make sure they are not hidden, marked as system files and/or read only.

Make sure your viewing options are set for all files.

Is the CD scratched or dirty, try to clean it up. Good luck.

ok, this is weird. i had found out from the primary user that she had used the disk a month ago with no problems. So, i took the CD to her computer and all the files were there and she could open them.

We are running on a Windows 2000 domain in Native mode. We have a mix of win95 and win2K pro workstations. Could there be a policy somewhere restricting all users but the the original(the one who could open the files) from opening the files? The CD was only used on win2K workstations.

I am not sure what to make of the situation.
