| Hardware Problem...
Hey, :
I'm fixing a PC for my friend. It's kind of old and dusty but when it came it worked, had a few viruses and much adware but it turned on at least. I formatted his comp, installed Win XP and everything went fine. Now my problem started after the computer was on for well over 8hours. I think it overheated 'cause it just reset out of nowhere, then again 5 minutes later, then continuously during startup. So I turned it off for 2 hours, when I went to turn it back on the monitor wouldn't display anything. Once again I cut the power, took out + rehooked the video card and powered on again. Now not only does the monitor not get a signal, but the comp is beeping. A long 1.5 second beep, stops for 2 seconds, then another 1.5 second beep ...and so on. I'm stumped-
...Now after a while I noticed that when I powered on the fan in the power supply didn't turn. Things just get worse. I took the thing apart again and put it back together. Now the fan still don't work, it doesn't beep anymore. (I checked around for beep codes, this was either power supply or RAM) I made sure all the wires from the Power Supply were connected properly, and that the cards were all in properly and not all dusty like before (I used a air pressure can to remove the dust, no actual contact.)
Now it's worse. It doesn't beep, or make any noise for that matter. The fan doesn't turn and the monitor doesn't get a signal. It's giving some sort of power since the CD drive light comes on, but it won't open still! |

Oh damn,
Is this my fault in particular? There's nothing I could do to fix it other than buying another one huh? |

depends on why the power supply failed mostly likley becuase the fan inside it stopped and then it over heated.
that wouldn't be your fault and the only way to fix it is to get another one unless your willing to go through it testing components and then replacing it |

You need to tell him the PSU fan burned out and over time the heat finally destroyed the components inside...
If it is an older system you can get by with a budget supply or spend a few more bucks and get a decent one...
what are the basic specs? |
