Good PSU? My Fortron is on it's death bed, and I'm in the market for something that'll last me a little longer with a few major power hungry upgrades on the way. I like the look, and the specs aren't too bad either. There's a good MIR on it too.

I see a new trend ,everyone is getting PSU that are 700w and above .Is this over kill ,how much power do they really need
My computer has a PSU thats about 4yrs a old Antec TPII-550
the antec load is
AMD 64 X2 6400 BLK CPU
ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED heatsink fan
DFI DK 790FX MOBO
Sapphire HD3870 GPU
OCZ Titanium XTC 2X1GB
2 500Gb HDD
2 250Gb HDD
2 DVD Burners
9 slot card reader
floopy reader
8 80mm fans
2 black lights
all on my power supply ,how much more power could SLI or crossfire pull than my system. It's a new build ,but I think my computer is running fine . Is my PSU holding me back, My MOBO can handle 3-way CrossFire . What will I need,a 1000W Psu if I go crossfire.

3 way crossfire will probably use around 500-700 watts alone (just the 3 cards) with full load. That doesn't quite sound right...but thats what it looks like (though I am quite tired, would not be surprised if I missed something). |

Well, the Power Supply may be overkill, but you're guaranteed for power.
I'd say a 1 KW+ PSU may be appropriate. |

Having a Power Supply that was "overkill", such as 1000 watts vs. the needed 400 watts, wouldn't cause damage to the computer, correct (assuming it was designed correctly)? |

Hi guys, this is my first post here and it looks like a great site for help & advice so I'm hoping someone can help me here. I'm on a tight budget (just lost my job ) and I need a new PSU for my system which hasn't worked right since day one. Here are my specs:
Intel E6850 CPU with Tuniq Tower 120 HSF
2x1GB OCZ DDR2-800 Memory (1t timing)
DFI Lanparty DK X48 Motherboard
ECS Geforce 8800GTS 320MB PCI-E Video
Antec 900 Case
2x 300GB Maxtor SATA-2 hard Disks
2x 500GB Seagate SATA-2 Hard Disks
Liteon 20 Speed IDE DVD Writer & Pioneer 212 SATA DVD Writer
4 case fans included with case
Enermas Noisetaker 600W SLI PSU
Now I had an ASUS P5n32-E SLI mainboard in that I thought was causing my problems and have changed that for the new DFI and I also changed the RAM not so long back too so that counts those both out. I want to try overclocking, which used to work a little for a while but it's now a struggle to get my system running OK as standard. I am also going to change the Video Card for 2x Radeon 4850 cards when I start back at work again so I am looking for a pretty powerful but well priced PSU.
I noticed that the Hi-Power PSU's are listed in the Good section in the first post of this thread, are these the ones being sold by ebuyer? The one I'm looking at is here on ebuyer and I know some of you will say 1000w is overkill but I want to make sure I've got more than enough handy for any potential upgrades. Does anyone use these PSU's and how do they stack up against the big buys (with big price tags)? |
