ram questions

Hey, I am intrested in building computers but I havn't been doing it for very long so I don't really understand RAM. Generally, when I buy a mother board the RAM comes with it. I want to add more ram to my QDI kudoz 7E/333 with amd athlon 1800+. It has 184 pin 2.4 DDR socets and it supports 266/333 MHz PC2100 and PC2700 DDR modules. I'm not really sure what to buy. Would this fit?

pc2100 is 266mhz ram

pc2700 is 333mhz ram

your cpu is a 266fsb cpu so the ram you linked to will work...as it is pc2100/266mhz ram

usually you can also go with faster ram but it would probably just run at 266mhz anyway

and certainly if you mix ram it will run at the speed of the slower stick of ram


what you might consider is getting faster ram so that you can upgrade the cpu later

any 184pin DDR ram should 'fit' in the socket etc....so its the speed of the ram that is more in question

so basically if the motherboard is 2100 then i should search for that, i don't really have to worry about the 266mhz providing i consider the whether it's 2700 or 2100 if you know what i mean. i have a got a stick of 256 ddr in at the mo that's 266MHZ so the sticks i linked to would go well with the one in the machine at the moment and there is no point putting in a 512DDR module or does that matter?

266mhz and PC2100 are the same thing....it is just 2 different ways of sayign the exact same thing

333mhz and PC2700 are the same thing


if you already have PC2100 and it is working then yes you can put more pc2100 in and it will work just fine

the only time you might need to replace the pc2100 is if you went to a faster cpu....for instance a 2500 Barton with the 333fsb...in that case you would probably need 333mhz/PC2700 Ram

ahhhh, what is this front side bus thing all about? i see the connection between the ram and cpu but what is it?

The FSB is the data path between the CPU and the memory.
