| Solo 5300 will not power on
Nothing new added, nothing changed, restarted windows xp and never powered up. Im so upset! I noticed that the amber/green light on the laptop that indicates the battery is charging or the AC adapter is plugged in was NOT on. I checked the AC adapter to see if it was plugged to the wall and it was. Also checked the adapter itself as well as another adapter entirely. But the green light that's on the AC adapter was dim and flickering. When I remove the plug from the laptop but leave it plugged to the wall, the light on the power adapter is bright green. The laptop does not power on battery power either, but when testing the battery ..it shows all greenn lights. When I plug the power adapter to the laptop the green light on the adapter dims and flickers again and the laptop still does not power on.
I tried removing the drives, ramm, battery, net card and reinstalled but remains completly dead. It shows no signs of life at all. Gateway warrenty ran out August 2004 , so im on my own. If theres a problem with the mother board or internal power source is it somthing I could do on my own? I mean, is it hard? My step dad is an IS director and good with pc's he wanted to take a look inside but said he thought you had to have a special tool or knowledge working with Gateway Notebooks because somthing that looked similiar to a screw couldnt be removed and stop him from opening the unit. Anyone familiar with Gateway Solo 5300 its been really good to me although I recal seeing an exclamation or some sort of problem under systems device manager in the power section I think and I couldnt get it to go into standby at all when changeing power saving options. Any ideas? I heard that Gateways Solo connector on the motherboard from the power supply was defective. I havent been able to verify this and Gateway is clueless. I find it hard to believe that Gateway has no record of this happeneing to any of there other gateway notebooks ,ever ?
One last thing I left out, I was in a hotel room, i usually plug into powerstrip but ths particular time I was plugged into the same socket as the air conditioner.=I know, really dumb!
any help, direction, suggestions or instruction is avery much appriciated |

I have a similar problem with a Gateway Solo 9550. The Battery Charge Indicator light as well as the Power Indicator lights are both on, but the laptop will not power up. It doesn't even attemp to power up. I pressed the reset button on the bottom, but it just makes the lights go off and then come back on when I release it. Fortunately, it is still under warranty, so I'm sending it in. I've found that I do not like their tech support whatsoever. I've only dealt with Dell in the past (so that's my only point of comparison), but when compared to Gateway.....I was very disappointed with Gateway tech support. But, since it's under warranty, they have to fix it (but I have to pay shipping).
I'll let you know if I find anything out about what caused the problem. I may forget, so you can send an email to "fluhmann '[at]' vvm.com" to remind me. |

little_chicka_d, we got the laptop back. I was told that Gateway replaced the motherboard. Sorry. I wish it had been something different.
