| Windows OS Crash
First off, I'm not some noob that knows nothing of computers, I work on them all the time and build them for all my friends... Ok, tell me what you guys think. I'm running a fairly new compaq Presario 2100, yes laugh if you must, but for 900$ 40gb drive, 512mb ram, and 15" screen couldnt go wrong. Ok, I was working on some school work, stuck in my jumpdrive and the computer froze, I thought damn, have to write this short paper over, ok fine. Turn it off, turn it back on, windows gives me an "Unmountable boot volume" error on startup. I said the hell with this, and went to sleep. (after about 30 minutes of trying to figure out how to fix this) (And I tried the recovery console from CD) So now, I just woke up, and my computer's hard drive is 38124MB, and has 38124MB free. So what the hell happened? It had all my data last night... It just dissapeared. Right now i'm running knoppix on my laptop... Somebody please help!! |

Ok, well chkdsk /r gives me the error that the partition is damaged or somthing of the sort. I'm going to try to run the utility again, but its really making me mad. I keep rebooting linux, and one time it pulled up my partition and I could see/access all my files. The drive was extremely slow and lagged alot while I was accessing it, and seemed to have alot of problems. |

Update: I found a way to access the drive when mounted via linux. The only way I can access it though, is through shell. If I'm accessing it through a program in linux, it says its not there. It constantly stalls out though when accessing it. I've tried tarring files through shell and it doesnt work that well. I maby get 1 file thats not corrupted, and have no way to save it. Know how to network knoppix and a windows computer? Any help would be greatly appriciated. |

Been toying with computer for a while, tried flashing bios.. Now when I boot from the hard drive it gives me a "Error loading operating system" error with a blinking cursor. I've tried reinstalling different OS's multiple times and still no luck. Any help would be extremely appriciated. |

It sounds like a typical hard drive failure. Did you have S.M.A.R.T. enabled (asuming it is available)? I would replace the hard drive and forget about it.
