Automatic Dial-up.
Just recently, whenever I start up Internet Explorer my DSL connection starts up automatically, even if the home page is set to a blank page. I suspect it's the doing of KaZaa that my brother installed last week. I've heard bad stories about Kazaa. Does anyone know what the problem is?

first off, dsl is an "always on" connection, so it SHOULD be connecting by itself... it hits the network when it has to.
the one major issue with kazaa that i've had is that it's chockfull of spyware (programs that people throw in with free software that serve ads, cover up ads on websites with their own ads, collect info about you, and overall try to make someone else money). i prefer morpheus over kazaa, it's ad free.
if you're worried about that, download ad-aware and the reffile update from here and run it and delete what it finds.

I tried Grokster after Morpheus refused to install on one box.
Grokster is exactly like Morpheus. Visually.

Actually my DSL connection (Verizon) has a dial-up screen just like a regular modem. In the past, that screen only pops-up when I go to a website, not a blank page like I mentioned before. Now it pops-up automatically even with a blank page. I'll give the program you linked a try tomorrow. Thanks.

there is an option in IE that says "automatically dial up connection"
uncheck that!!
I hate that lol
Yeah my dsl is also "dialup" using PPPoE.
No phone number, but still have to dialup anytime I want to connect. (in IE on menubar Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections tab)
If my dsl was worth a crap I'd have it in a startup with no prompts...
however it sucks

hey vass
have you tried this?
http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/
I replaced the proprietary software that came with a family member's dsl set-up
It's pretty simple to do and the instructions are well-written
I did this on a w2k machine for people who are complete newbies - I have an admin account on that machine

nah, the reason my dsl sucks a$$ is because we're about 5000 ft from the CO (1800 ft is the required maximum
)
idiots at verizon hooks us up when they shouldn't have lol
This uses winpoet, and I dont really have any issues with it, fairly idiot proof.
Interesting though, now if I can get it to work on linux I'll be happy lol (will be posting up soon haha)

The site is still hosed for me. In other news, it's still 78° here. It's supposed to hit 100° tomorrow.
