Geforce 4 problems- Burnt AGP slot?
Hey all! Thanks for reading my first post.

My system:
AMd Athlon XP 1300
512 mb ram
abit Kx7-333 mobo
PNY Geforce Ti4400, AGP
Windows XP Pro
(Other stuff: 2 x 100 gb hd's, a dvd rom and a cd-rw)
Here's my problem. Last night I rolled back my Nvidia drivers (to 53.04), and noticed that afterwards, WinXP couldn't find the card anymore. I shut it down and reseated the card, after which my display quit working completely. The system will post, all the lights and drives come on, and there are no beeps of any sort.
I noticed the fan on the card doesn't spin either, so I assume that either the video card or the AGP slot is burnt (since they both worked fine for 2 years prior).
ALSO, I tested out a new Radeon 7000 AGP, and it did the same thing.
So can any of you techies weigh in on this problem? I would appreciate it greatly!

I've never heard of a driver damaging a card. I would say that more than likely, the card(s) just aren't seated correctly.
Take it out, then put it back in, firmly. Make sure it's level in the slot and the back isn't sticking out of the slot. Be sure to secure it with the screw as well. This signature intentionally left blank.

I tried re-seating both cards a few times (until they 'click' into place), and still no change. :/ And no, I don't think switching drivers caused the problem, either. I believe something is wrong with the card itself, and possibly my AGP slot too.
That's my question - since no AGP cards are working in my system, could the slot be 'burnt' so that it no longer functions?Last edited by intellisquid; November 10th, 2004 at 10:04 PM.

If you screwed up your AGP slot then you cannot get another card to fix it. I highly doubt you burnt it though.

Shabow - yeah, that's the reason I tested the Radeon card, to see if the problem was the old Geforce or the slot itself. Since the Rad didn't work either, I figure it's the slot. Do you know of any other ways an AGP slot could get f*ed up, if it didn't get burnt?
thanks mate.

whats up man, i think the same thing happened to my agp slot. i am trying to figure it out. my graphics card works in my friends computer but not in mine. see i took it out and installed it in his and updated the drivers to like 66. something. then later that day i put my graphics card back in my computer and it didn't work anymore. my fan still worked on my grahics card and whenever i unplugged it my monitor said to check the video cable. whenever i plugged it back in all i got was a black screen. i cant see anything when i plug it in. I think my agp slot is burnt because my card works in my friends comp. I probably messed something up taking my graphics card in and out so many times. do you know if there is a way to replace the agp slot only or do you need to replace the entire motherboard? I have a geforce 4 ti4200 64mb.

Hey man. Turned out my problem was a dead cpu, after i had already tried switching out graphics cards, motherboard and power supply
hehe
in your case it sounds like it's the slot. if you have another agp card, try that one instead, and then if it doesn't work you'll know it's your slot (or at least a problem on your motherboard). and maybe shine a flashlight in it and make sure there's no dust or anything, just in case
that's what i would do. oh yeah and if you post a new forum thread, more (knowledgeable) people will see it. hope that helps

fixing agp slots
i have gigabyte mother board and AGP ATI 9550 card and i have numerous problems with it for it keeps cutting out. i have replaced it with another ATI AGP with the same results. However if i replace the video card with an TNT2 card, it works perfectly and one can bang and move the board and nothing exciting happens. i have measured both ATI cards finger contact surface with a micrometer, the ATI card measure ).065 while the TNT2 is .068 inch.
three thousands of inch (two hair thickness) makes all the difference, for the TNT card fits into the slot perfectly. i have discovered a lot of Gigabyte MB with the green AGP slot have this problem.
