| Problems with new graphics card and onboard card
Alright.. I installed the Nvidia card, installed the drivers for it and it is recognized by Windows 98. I plugged the monitor into the new display port on the back of the PC and a message said at a command prompt, "If you can see this then the installation of your new card was successful. Go to the display settings and adjust...", and so I did.
Problem was when I went to the display settings after rehooking my monitor to the onboard card, it didn't seem to want me to set the default card as the Nvidia. Every time I would change a resolution setting or bitrate, it'd go right back to the default.
At this point I was pulling my hair out. I decided to haul over to the BIOS and uninstall the onboard and see where that got me...exactly nowhere. In fact, not only do I still not get a display other than that command prompt message from the Nvidia, I get no display whatsoever from the onboard (of course).
Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Ok what you need to do:
1. Uninstall all graphic card drivers. This includes the onboard as well as the nvidia.
2. In bios disable the onboard card.
3. Rerun the nvidia driver installation.
4. Reboot.
You can't run the on board with the nvidia at the same time. If that doesn't work you'll need to tell us your specs like the video card you bought the mother board you have and wether it has an integrated graphics card. |

I'd try that, but the thing is I don't have a display. I uninstalled the onboard graphics because I figured it wouldn't support two cards at once and the only thing I get from the Nvidia mx4000 is that same old lovely message telling me that everything is working just fine. Is there an easy way to reset the BIOS without having to go into the BIOS? Like a hardware reset of some sort? This would all be so much easier if I could see what I was doing.
Thanks again |

"after rehooking my monitor to the onboard card"
You need to plug the monitor into the card thats enabled. Is the mx4000 still in the pc, if it is plug the monitor into it. |

Every time I plug the monitor into the MX4000 I get the same command prompt screen with the message telling me that my card is correctly installed and to adjust the display settings in Windows. After that, I try to somehow force out of the message and continue booting. It's the same thing everytime I boot. The onboard, which is now disabled, gives me no display (of course).
Thanks |

Ok command prompt meaning just after the boot, full screen dos style?
How do you force out the message and continue booting? Can you actually get into windows or does it hang during boot?
First things first tho can you confirm that the onboard video has been disabled and do you have an installation cd for win98 and drivers for your audio, lan, modem, ect? You might want to consider reinstalling win98. |

It doesn't necessarily hang..just can't get past the message from the Nvidia card. The message pops up in the middle of booting. I did in fact disable the onboard video, so I think your suggestion to reinstall Windows98 is the best idea. Thanks a ton for all of your help.

Can you boot into safe mode? By holding f8 when the comp boots? If you can get to the shell in safe mode you could uninstall the drivers, and try from there. |
