Thread: Random Restarts?
November 23rd, 2004, 04:14 AM #1
1st build, i got working on wednesday n been messing w/it since
but 1 overall bug is randon restarts
usually happens when im doing something-organizing files on my external-hd, exiting Doom3;hasnt restarted unless i wuz playing multiplayer!, n while i walked away and was letting virus/spyware scans run
my friend mentioned it may be running too hot, im pretty sure that i put enough compound on, n heatsinks surely on, any tighter is risky (cpu-110-120*f/mobo-80*f)
eVGA:GeForce FX 5700
2x fans mounted on heatsink
4x case fans

Power supply.....screwy memory...bad drivers...overheating... unfortunately random restarts (I assume you mean blue screen stop errors) can be caused by a number of such things. The ones I've mentoined there are about the most common (not neccesarily in that order).
MemTest86 is a fairly straightforwared/simple way to test whether or not the memory could be the culprit. It boots off a floppy and tests your memory... normally let it run for a few hours and see if it gives anything (you should get absolutely no errors).
Judging by those temps overheating its a very unlikely problem in this case.
Do you have the latest video drivers?
if Its XP, did you install service pack 2?

Well, you don't want to use too much thermal compound. No more than enough to cover the core with a paper-thin layer, if that. But it doesn't sound like an overheating problem to me. Sounds more like a driver issue. Have you made sure all your drivers are the most up-to-date? Most common problem with new builds. Check your chipset (motherboard) drivers for sure as from the symptoms, it seems like a communication problem.

easiest first check is to download EverestHome and monitor your Voltages and temps... checking them in the bios does little good as your system is at its coolest and the PSU is under the least power drain...

my bad 4got to name mobo
i got that temp reading from asus's bundled software, not BIOS
i have most drivers up-to-date, but it isnt even internet connected yet (needa get specs for thys crappy puter, so i kan upgrade thys enough to run dsl) but soon
i had used memtest, but was unsure wut i wuz looking for?
when it restarts, it just turns off (as if i was hitting reset switch) no blue screen
i got 3dmark on cdrw but havent gotten round to gettin it running yet
*had it online over the weekend, but was at a friends house, n most the tyme was spent getting doom3 working again
