Used Killdisk, now o/s says there is no Hard Drive
OK,
I had WIN2K, but needed WinXp to use Digidesign's MBOX.
So I formatted my Maxtor 6Y080L0 using Killdisk.
After the format, I went to install XP and it tried to format the Hard drive, but after reaching 100% said it could not complete the installation. I tried again, but now it's saying there is no drive. I checked my BIOS and it auto detects that in fact the drive is still there.
No matter what bootdisk I use, it tells me "NTLDR is missing", and I can not seem to get anywhere with either my Win2K, or now the new WinXP cd. When I tried to reinstall Win2K, it gave me this error message "Disk I/O error: Status = 00001000".
PLEASE HELP, SOMEONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Last edited by evilivy; November 23rd, 2004 at 10:29 PM.

Download PowerMax and use the "Low Level Format" to write 0's to the drive.
After that, you should have no problems installing your OS.This signature intentionally left blank.

Try my link again.
PowerMax may have "Generic" drive support. I know Seagate SeaTools does. Either way, it's usually best to get the software for your make/model of HDD. If you search in the Storage forum, you should find a post I made that links to all the HDD sites and their software. This signature intentionally left blank.

hehe..just to tell you guys..i live off of powermax at work. I like it because not only does it erase the drive (like kill disk) but it checks the whole thing for errors...meaning i don't reinstall an os and redo the whole computer, just to find out the hdd is crapping out.
cus that always sux and i haven't found a drive yet that it does not work on. I usually do 2-10 gig drives on crappy computers at my school (where i work) and they work fine...but i've used it on anything up to a 160 gig drive...just expect it to take a while....if you have a big drive...plan on just leaving it overnight.

evilricks last link works fine...takes you right to the download.

edit/ powermax only works with ata drives (and it dosen't work with some quantum's but that dosen't matter in this case) try going to http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/ma...re%20Downloads and see if that gets you anywhere...there you can select exactly what type of drive it is
and get some software for it
.
edit again/ just wanted to say, for anyone who reads this, powermax works with ata quantum hard drives but not scsi quantum hard drives...just wanted to get my facts straight.Last edited by sr71000; November 23rd, 2004 at 11:12 PM.

Did you run the PowerMax.exe? It will create the bootdisk. Don't just copy powermax.exe to a bootable floppy.

YAY!! It's working!! (Powermax)
I have started the Low Level Format
So, if I understand correctly, Powermax will also let me know if the drive has died all together?
-

You'll have to run the Full Test for it to check that. If it is dead, it will tell you during the Zero Fill that you need to run the Full Test.
*Just for the sake of it. You're actually NOT doing a Low-Level Format. You're just writing 0's to the drive. The term Low-Level Format is a carry over from days gone by. If you actually did a Low-Level Format to that drive it would render it useless. This signature intentionally left blank.

would be nice, but honestly what good is it? Its not like the phones have much surface area to spread that heat out over to heatsink fins or material, and the heatpipes would have to be nearly paper...
