| Is my harddrive corrupted?
After running the windows XP screen for a very long time, it finally clicks on with this error message set to a bright blue background screen:
Stop: c0000221 {bad Image Checksum}
The image COMCTL32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum.
I'm going to try reinstalling windows XP to see if that fixes it. I can't do a strait reformat because I have to recover some research data first. |

Has it previously worked OK?
If the reinstall doesn't fix it then use memtest86 to check the RAM, and the manufacturers disk tool to test the drive, if you've not already done so. Good luck..

I'm still waiting to find my disk before I can reinstall windows.
There is no message about a physical memory dump.
How am I suppose to use this memtest86 program without being able to start up windows?
How do I check the drive with the manufacturers disk?
I have no such disk, only a windows installation disk.

The two utilities I mention are downloaded as bootable floppy images, just download them and follow the instructions to make the floppies. Set the PC to boot from floppy and put the disk in and they should start automatically. |

Ok, here's the deal:
1. I got the computer back up with a new install of windows.
2. I had to use a windows XP home disc because I couldn't find the Pro disc - Now there is no option to disable "use simple filesharing". It doesn't exist.
3. I am still getting a message from S.M.A.R.T. everytime I startup the computer, warning me of a potential harddrive failure. |
