password is wrong?

i'm such a moron. here's what happened...
i logged on to my laptop (dell inspiron 5100) and attempted to connect to the internet (yes i still have dial up) it didn't work so i rebooted my comp. When i tried my password to login, it told me it was wrong. I've been using this password for a very long time. It's a very simple eight letter word. I know my freakin' password!!! What is going on and what can i do to fix it?

Make sure you don't have CAPSLOCK on.

If it's XP Home, you can go in Safe Mode and log in as Administrator and remove the password. Reboot and login as the user you want and then set the password again.

Sometimes for some unknown reason windows changes the input locale to something else than what it's usually.
For example, I can't type a password with scandinavian letters (åäö) if the input locale is suddenly EN rather than FI.

Reboot fixes that.

do you have any really important files on this, or are you trying to get to a server logon through the internet. if not, go into administrator like the big mean moderator (hes still a beta, he lied about being 1.0) and take off the password. if your on a 5100, whats the point of a password. your not taking it anywhere and no one will steal it...

Make sure ther is nothing wrong with your key board that can cause it to input differnt keys
