I have a Compaq Deskpro with win98se.
As it happened. I shut my machine off nightly, last night doing so as a CD was stuck in drive – it wouldn’t come out via the faceplate button or the eject command. Planned to open the box in morning to physically extract..
In morning, started machine and noted that computer light came on but no usual clicking noises as computer loaded. Also noted that monitor remained black. Tried the eject button and CD came out.(DVD cd, but I don’t have a reader so I find out ).
Shut off the machine, waited a few minutes and restarted with nothing in either drive. Monitor still remained black. and computer did not load(a flicker on the CD and the computer lite was on, but no loading. Did Ctrl-Alt-Del and nothing happened. Tried again – still nothing. Another time and no. Shut off machine.
I need a start up disk (of course ain’t done that or used disk for something else) but I did have my Win98 program disk and I figure if it reads the CD slot, I got a chance. So put the disc in and did a reboot. Monitor came on and went to dos (I hadn’t seen this one before in 3 years) It asked whether I wanted to start computer with CD, from HD and a third choice which I cannot remember but was farther out in left field. So first I picked HD. The screen changed to the Windows cloud thing and then bounced back to the same dos screen. I can’t remember for sure but I either picked the HD again or I did the CD(when I did the CD it told me it was the wrong CD-that this CD was for computers without an O.S.-thinking about it(its been 5 hrs ago)I think it wanted a systems disk- that would be the floppy, right?
Anyways it did kick the computer into load mode and I am on. I figured now would be a good time to make a system disk(better late than never).
I tried. Computer tells me to put in the Win98 cd as it can’t find (it showed in symbols which kinda look like E R a with 2 dots above the a. I figured out that means “winboot sys” file.
I did a scandisk which shows no errors
I did a virus check which shows no bugs
I use another program which has got me out of numerous binds in 5 years called “PCDOCTOR oncallv2” – google pcdoctor and it is the 5th one down. This program goes into the registry and checks it out and shows errors. I follow manually and delete the offending information, and things work again. Anyways, it cannot see the problem existing.
That is what I have done.
Right now I don’t want to shut off my machine as I know this info is missing.
I have another computer, a 486 IBM with Win98se freshly put on. Can I extract stuff off of there to put in my Compaq?
Or, what should I do?
Throw me a bone………………..
Thanks
