display settings won't reset

On one of my computers the display is normally set at 1152x864 @ 80MHz. When I play Painkiller (v1.5 patch), I use the same resolution and frequency. However, when I quit the game, the display is set to 640x480. When I try to restore the settings, I get this error:
Code:
The display control panel is unable to change the display settings. You may not have appropriate administrative rights to change these settings.
(see attachment for screenshot)

So I log into the Administrator account and try to change the settings but get the same error. I can open any game and play it just fine at any resolution without problems but I can't change the resolution in Windows back to normal.

If I log off of any account and log back into Windows, I continue to have the same problem. But if I restart my computer, the resolution is back at what it was before the problem occured. But as soon as I play and exit Painkiller, it goes back to 640x480. Normally 640x480 doesn't even show up as a supported resolution unless I'm in safe mode.

I was thinking maybe there are user profiles set or something that would affect this but I really have no idea. I've tried using about 8 different drivers for my video card but this problem still happens. Any ideas?

Well I looked on their forum and didn't find anything but I think I figured it out. I had changed my PCI latency timer settings a while back to get better performance from my sound card. Initially I had set the latency timer of the AGP slot at 128. I just set it back to 248 and the last 2 runs of Painkiller were successful. Hopefully this continues to work.
