| XP choking while browsing a feww hundred files?
would a P4 2.8 system with 512 ddr and a 7200 HDD be so SLOW while simply browing and loading silly icons for a couple hundred .jpg's?
i have a load of kodak shots and i cant scroll down becasue the system locks up and chokes trying to load the icons for the jpg type..
surely a system like mine should have no problem simply browsing!
i literally have to scroll and wait.. scroll and wait.. scroll and wait..
any one else knw about this kinda stuff?
oh, my system is optimised for performance in the my computer properties too..
thx! |

You might want to increase your RAM, as most around here will agree that 512MB is pretty much the bare minimum for running XP with any speed.

| - Maybe your computer is infected with spyware (click link and download/install/run)
- Or, Maybe your CPU is out to lunch running something. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL, and you should see the 'Task Manager' pop open. View the [Processes] tab, and look at the CPU column. Is anything stuck at a high number (close to 100)? (Note: System Idle Process is okay to be near 100)
- In your folder, what if you set the view to List? (View menu -> List)

You can do a crtl+alt+del and remove all programs (except your antivirus, you do have antivirus, right) and except explorer. This will speed up Windows considerably.

hi guys, thanks for replying, unfortunately im not even displaying thumbs, just the actual adobe icon that .jpg are linked to...
when i open the folder, the icons start off as the standard .dat style, then get refreshed to the adobe .jpg version...
this takes 99% of the ram when scrolling, and i have got no adware, no virii or any unneccesary tasks taking up more than 1% of ram idling...
strange, eh... |

try going to View in the window and then to List...this should help it out a bit...sounds like one of two things...either your video card is pretty low-end and it's getting caught up on those jpgs, or your VM is too low for the amount of RAM you have...Until you get 1GB of RAM, I'd set your Virtual Memory to 300-500 just to be safe. This may help a little, but not too much...Good luck...

yeah, list details is my default already..
and my paging file is 768megs too..
it could very well be my gfx card though, its only a geforce fx 5200 128ddr...
good point, although, it does seem mad you have to spend at least £100 on a dedicated GPU just to browse..
my old 386 could browse better than this rig! |

yup, fpantovich... just as I said in my first post
Another thing that's come to my mind, is that you could just be missing graphics drivers. Have you installed the latest nVidia drivers for your card?
