Sudden Error...Please Help!

Earlier My compuer was working fine.
Then after work I suddenly got an error as I booted into windows..

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Then some stuff that doesnt matter

STOP: 0x000000ED (0x86783718, 0xc0000185, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I have tried going into windows recovery to try the chkdsk /r but as it tries to read the HDD it doesnt do anything for a very long time so I give up

Also When i boot into Safe mode of any kind it gives the same error. So I dont know what to do at this point.

Its a Western Digital SATA hard drive. Any help would be much apreciated

If you bought a retail version of the hard drive it came with a cd with Data Lifeguard Tools on it. Boot from this cd (you may need to change the boot order in you bios to boot from cd) and run the diagnostic program to see if your hard drive has failed. If you didn't get a cd with your hard drive you can download a version of it from the link below. It is small enough that you can put it on a floppy disk but you will need a boot disk to boot your pc.

Here is a link to Microsofts Knowledge Base with info on that error but the solutions don't seem to apply in your case.
