Your Ethernet light is ok , this point that your power supply +5 VSB is ok only. That was same for me. I beleive your problem is similar like me.. Because GATEWAY SELECTED A BAD POWER SUPPLY. it has only 100 W for 12v and 5v.. So after one year this power supply became dead. Because it became old it is like to drive a big bus with a car engine.. Do you understand me ?
So You must open backside to open the case in order to change take this power supply..
For testing purpose you can always buy a psu tester from a local Compusa or Fry's.. cost about 15$. If your power supply didi passed it, Then write to me to select a psu.. There is an another level after that, while psu is gone my hard disk also is gone.. If this happens also to you you must completly open the case and put a new hard disk..
At these days, I am waiting more people from this same machine..

Onder,
I had my power source checked today and found out that it was not working at all. They repair guy was shocked to see the output of the psu, considering the demands of the unit.So i used an external power source plugged it into the mother board, put the whole thing back together and it works flawlessly now.Do you think i will have any problems?I really appreciatte your tutorial on how to open the 610,it helped out so much.Take care!!
Thanks again,

Joe,
I heard a lot about hard disk also. Many people mailed me about two things one is PSU and other is hard disk. So I suggests to you that backup all of your important data from the hard disk. Gateway use a western digital 120 GB made in china hard disk but anyway it has only one-year warrenty.. After my dead hard disk I changed to seagate because currently they offers a 5 years warrenty on it.
If you will have a further question please let me know.

I know this post is old, but I am having the same problem.
But I was wondering, how do you connect a standard PSU to the connectors in the case, they don't fit as far as I can tell without some splicing to put the connectors from the old psu on the new one... |

Another Gateway 610 owner with the same problem- Onder - It is unclear what you did for a power supply. Did you find one that fit? Also, I guess I want to make sure that is my problem. No activity at all when I hit the on button. Ethernet light is on though. |

Unbelievable!!!! I thought that I was the only one with this problem! My computer had to go back 3 times withing the last two months. First problem was that the computer would just shut off on it own. I was able to hit the power button on again to turn it on. Got that fixed. Second, I was not able to get my windows media player to work, Ctrl+Alt+Del would not work, media center tuner not working, had to type "http://" to get into the web sites, not just "www". Could not download anything, and shutting down my computer kept on popping up "could not find missing rundll.exe". Third, power went out again, this time I could not even get it to turn on after I unplugged and plugged in the power cord. I really like my gateway computer, but after reading all the post regarding this model, I'm about ready to get the all-in-one from Sony. I am still under warranty (thank God) but they kept my computer (the second time) for about 2 weeks, I complained about my warranty getting used up by them just keeping it there. Well, regardless, I'm going to purchase another extended warranty. The tech lady told me that the 610 models were the first of its kindm therefore it had problems to begin with. She went on telling me that the Profile 5.5 is one of their computers that she has hardly got any complaints about. My computer is not even a year old. But the fact that is is not on their website anymore is surprising and also the fact that she said it is a refurbished model now. Hmmmmmmmm..... I went to the trade-in link. They are asking for $249 dollars for a trade in. Yeah right!!! Why don't they just give us the Profile 5.5 for compensation. This is just plain Ridiculous. I guess really the warranty is the cheaper route to get this thing up and running properly. I usually have my computer on 24/7 since I'm taking full capabilities of the Media Center. Oh, not only that, I can't even hook up this computer to my 62" HDTV. Oh well, I hoping to learn more through this forum about this computer. One thing....When I called it in for the third time, they asked if I did a memory increase. WHY? I have 2 Gigs of ram that was given to me for my birthday. I'm just waiting for the computer to come back so that I can install it.
Any Ideas?
thanks! |

deezy858....how is your external power supply working out? Any problems yet. if not, can you post what external power supply you used and where you bought it? Did you have to make any modifications to your unit to accomodate this PSU?
thanks |
