Ok, my husband helped me figure out my fan action. I have 3 fans, 1 in the back, 1 on the processor and one in the front...the one in the back is blowing in and the one on the processor is blowing towards the processor so that seems to be correct. The one in the front was blowing in also though. It was filthy and we thought maybe it should be turned around to blow out, cleaned and also flush with the cpu (before it was connected with double-sided tape which if that was used to connect the fan which was blowing out the air would just come back inside (then he used a car radiator comparison). So he did that and fastened it to the cpu. Do you think this could be the problem? We'll see if this works...Or still more fans needed? I could possibly squeeze one in the back on the bottom.?. I'm attaching a picture of the inside for sr71000, let me know what you think. Thank you!

have the fan in the back to blow out and the one in the front to blow in. thats your problem, both fans are blowing in. there's no way for the hot air to be evacuated from inside the case.

you don't have to do anything special with the processor fan...just take the fan off and clean all the dust out very well, then switch the fans as ken said and get a flow of air coming in the front and coming out the back. that should clean it up nice ...as ken said..that's a very big problem (by the way..when someone asks..you don't count the processor fan as a case fan ...so you have 2 fans which is plenty ) make a flow of air from the front to the back and clean out the dust and you should be good to go....if the computer still tends to shut down after this what I would do is run it and actually watch the computer....watch to see if one of the fans stops spinning....this should fix it up for you though let us know how it works.

/edit btw..was it the front fan you hooked up special? can you post up a bigger picture of what that looks like? i'm interested to see this...always looking for some new good ideas on hooking things up .

it looks like they used double-sided tape to affix the front fan. note the white squares at the corners of the fan. usually there is a frame there that snaps onto the case to hold the fan.

There was double-sided tape to affix the front fan...oh, I see, I took that picture before we switched the front fan from blowing in to blowing out. But I guess we need to put that back how it was and changed the rear one.

Question for ya: my husband is no computer wiz either, just a mr. fix-it guy...he was wondering, with the front fan, how it doesn't line up with the vent in the front of the case...I mean, there's a gap between the fan and the outside of the case but you'd think the holes/vents should line up...is that a big deal or is it close enough? You also can't "feel" the air blowing from outside the case in front...only when you take off the front cover...is that normal? Maybe the question is moot as we will be changing it anyway.........

Good to know about the fact that I have 2 fans, not 3... I will take another pic of the fan for you 71000 so check back tomorrow afternoon and let me know what you think. I will also keep you posted if this "fix" ends up not working. I'm very happy that I may have obtained the answer to this nightmare with my computer through you fellas! I was seriously ready to chuck this one.

yES my computer keeps shutting down

I had a virus on my computer and so I had to reinstall everything and wasn't having any problems before that but now since reinstalling drivers etc I am having shut down problems and i checked everything and unplugged it and can't see why its shutting down. I was thinking maybe it was the way I had my speakers plugged in to the wrong place. I unplugged them and it worked for awhile without shutting down but when I went to a website it shut down again. I am not sure why this is happening.

PC keeps shutting off on it's own.

I was having the same issue about a week ago on a Sony Vaio PC. It would shut itself down by itself after you would start using it. Then I would have to just turn it back on. Well after checking the RAM and the power supply, I decided to blow the dust out, (and believe me it was dusty) after spending about 25 minutes cleaning out, I plugged it all back up, and ran it straight for nearly 3 hours, and it didn't shut off no more, so in addition to checking the RAM and the power supply try to blow it out, you can get a can of condensed air at Wal-mart for about 5 or 6 bucks.

I am so fed up with my computer I spent over 1,200 dollars for this laptop at bestbuy and I bet it does'nt even let this go through I bought one of those fans at a store that go under the laptop I've only had this thing for maybe 4 months and it's had so many problems the printer was a goner after the first month I think the scanner worked once anyways I'm trying to go to school on-line but can't until I get this thing fixed im so upset with myself that I bought a laptop I wish so bad no that I would have bought a desktop this is a HP and when I turn it on it has so many error reports that if I go to them they attempt to fix but shut down the computer it's like a complete black out and like the person said above mine gets so hot even with this fan underneath what I do is unplug everything and stand in front of an osculating fan for about 5 minutes now I have a knew routine where I take it to the freezer and stand in front of there for a couple of minutes now i take an ice pack cover it up of course so no water can get in and keep it under the laptop so it keeps it almost freezing im just so pissed off and this geek squad 120 bucks an hour what are they nuts? I mean I could have bought a car for 1,200 this was a lot of money for me and I'm just so upset so now they want me to bring it in for a 3 day diagnostic whatever, the thing is is im so dumb when it comes to computer hardware,,ya know, I mean but I just feel like I have no idea what there talking about and they no this? and because I didn't buy the 300 dollar warranty come on now 300 yeah right? but I still have the 1yr in store warranty I feel I guess I need to get moving right? so if anyone has any suggestions please please help me, there's nothing worse then being in the middle of of a term paper and it doesn't matter if you save or not you lose all data when it does this or an e-mail you have to write send write send write send you get it, it's become a night mare so I've had to put school off and everything, do I even have any rights as far as best buy is concerned?? thanks Elizabeth in Michigan

It has been doing this on and off for several months and I'm at a loss as to why and am about to just get a new computer.

I went to Best Buy's geek squad several months back and they replaced: the motherboard, processor, power supply, power strip, re-installed windows xp pro. I thought that last one would do the trick but shortly after I got the computer back, it did it again. It happened again, after I installed office xp pro... So I uninstalled it. I then didn't have any problems for some time so I tried installing it again. Worked fine.

It has been several months since then and just recently started shutting down again! The only thing I've done lately is install some accounting (BETA stage) program from eBay...and it started shutting down again. First just once then once a day then a couple times until last night I couldn't even go into my outlook w/o it shutting down. I should say that I've been in several different programs inculding internet explorer during the shut-downs. I tried to "repair" office, and lost all my emails and it shut down again. Tried to uninstall the blasted thing and it won't even let it "configure" for the uninstall, just keeps shutting down.
Consiquently, I tried re-installing windows back then and it did the same thing, wouldn't even let me, which is why I had to have the geek squad do it.

I went into outlook today and got my new mail just fine but I know if I try to uninstall it, it will do the same thing...but my question is, what the heck is causing this??? Could it be a "bug" in my operating system or office software? I got those two from a friend long ago so they were burned and aren't the original, could that be why? Is it my memory? I've replaced everything else practically, I'm at my witts end.

Is the ANYONE else out there in America, the world, who has had this problem???

    Please help.
okHi there omg, this is like we have the same exact problem If I did'nt know better I would think we were twins please e-mail me if you can at elizabethpopma@yahoo.com I only say that because I doubt my laptop will let me finish all that id like to say to you, this is so comforting to know that I'm not going through this alone, I feel like a bought a lemon laptop, I mean it's my first one so yeah im a virgin but all the same for what I paid for this piece of shit I could have bought a car, my whole life is on hold, meaning school etc,,, I hate it, and it's taken everyting I have not to take a hammer to it or throw it off of the high rise balcony , seriously it's overheating like way to often and having these black outs like every 20 minutes at times then none for a few days (it has to be a woman) I swear I have put it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer!!!! I'm getting desperate,,,,, maybe you can help, before there's a crime scene lol, thanks Elizabeth in Holland Michigan

Please advise: what do you mean, "connect the cable from my screen to my hard drive" which cable? Power cable? Also, my computer turns on just fine after it shuts off...it's just keeping it on...bare with me please, I'm not ultra smart about computers.
After spending all that money replacing motherboard, power supply, re-installing Windows, and whatever else, it would have been better and possibly cheaper if you had just bought another computer. The high pitched tone you hear is usually evidence of an overheating problem. How is your fan working? A computer will turn itself off if it gets too hot. I would assume your insides were cleaned of all dust when it was being repaired. You should be able to hear if your fan is running or not.
The only other thing I can think of would be a conflict in your bios settings. The manufaturer should be able to tell you what they should be and how to get to them to correct them.

Much cheaper and less hassle to just go buy a new computer. And don't load any bootleg copies of programs onto it. It's obvious yours has a fatal error and is shutting down to protect itself, or else has a major conflict in the bios. If you really want to you can contact the manufacturer and let them tell you how to open your bios and tell you what settings it should have.

    shutting down

There is a problem with the operating system, or with data stored on the hard drive. If the machine is running Windows 98, right click on the icon for the hard drive, and open the 'Tools' menu. Select 'Error checking' and procede. If the computer is running Windows XP, go to the control panel, select 'Maintenance' and look in the upper left corner for 'System Restore'. Point at that and click, and then select 'Restore system to an earlier time.' You will not lose any data, unless the hard drive is severely messed up. You should already have backed up everything important on the hard drive to a CD-ROM, or some other storage media. If this does not help, you need to have a technician check out the machine. Such a person can determine if the Central Processor Unit or the power supply have gotten so dirty that they are over heating, or if the software is corrupted.

If it is a registry problem, you can use ErrorFix to repair it. Make PC Faster

hey im experiencing the same thing only with a laptop. it seems as if my laptop is shutting down when there is a big load on my video card or when my fan is working pretty hard. i thought my laptop was getting to hot and then shuttin off but it turned out to be the battery. i took my battery out and put it back in and it started workin for a a couple hours and then it went dead again. i assure u its not a virus or program problem, its ur power supply. either u have a short in your wires or a connector is loose. GET A NEW POWER SUPPLY. it took me months to isolate the problem and figure it out. does your pc shut down when ur processor is working hard, like watching video or running multiple programs,or does it do it at totally random times?
