with all the money I have put in to this computer rebuilding it would still be better to put the time and money in to this one than to buy another one

If you need advice on how to modifying the case, let us know, I'm not the only one that dose that.
Several different tools can do it.

Let us know what kind of guards you have now, where the fans are, and how many.

Lightbulb Motherboard weakness at high resolutions

    Hi dudes,

I have a desktop in my room which has a k7vmp too. For many years i have been facing the same problem you guys have described here in this topic. My computer suddenly stops working and gets freezed. Sometimes happens weird things just like mentioned above like nonstop beeping, no screen, and so on. but the weirdest thing is these problems happen randomly. Sometimes it spends all day long working perfectly, but rare though. HOWEVER, my problems vanished when i just changed the screen, from an LCD to a CRT, Well, i used to use the recommended resolution of the "old" monitor which was 1440X900, now i use 1280X1024. In My humble opinion, the VIA KM400 north bridge chipset which comes on this board, and also my hardware don't support high resolutions, or better saying, weren't well designed to support high resolutions or modern monitor. I have a k7vmp, GeForce 5200 FX, 1GB Kingston RAM and some other stuffs that don't affect the board directly.
I say that because i am working with FPGA's in college, and designing circuits to high resolution screens is not such a simple thing. So, considering this board is relatively old, engineers and designers, due to the boundary conditions and deadlines of project maybe couldn't design a hardware following the highest specifications of the 21th century.
That was just i thing that i would like to share because this desktop has gave me headaches, and at a first sight, these kind of problems are easy to solve. but we never know what comes behind it.

Apparently Necromancy must be your degree. Please note that this particular thread is several years old and has been dug up by previous Necromantic Initiates. You may want to start your own thread to get some Black light on your own problems ... (notice i didnt say spot light, cause that ruins the Necromantic theme!)

    Cheers!

    anyone tried ram yet?

i had this problem with my old pc, try taking all your ram out and putting it back one by one.
once youve put in the first one start your pc, if it still makes that noise put it in another slot.
If it doesnt add another one and so on.

    Hope this work for you

This thread is rather ancient pete, may want to start your own. Also please supply a little more information about your problem starting with the make and model of your PC or better yet listing all of its specifications. Oh, and welcome to TechIMO.

Welcome all of you new people to Techimo. Do a search for problems similar to yours, and if that doesn't work, start your own thread..

A thread specific to you and your particular problem is much easier to work on than one with new people jumping in with similar problems.

So each with a new thread!

    And welcome (individually) to Techimo!!

And justunlisted, run Memtestx86... one ram stick at a time. You may have a memory problem.

But if my computer keeps shutting down every often, how do I run the program. Is this a legal software available online?

Look for a corrupt hard drive first.

If it is just a corrupt hard drive, memtest86 will run.

Yes it is free, and legal.

If you can' get a computer to boot, and stay running, then of course, you can't run software tests.

In that case you have to go to basic hardware trouble shooting methods.

You are going to need another computer, or another set of parts, for complete testing.(or a local shop, to test parts for you)

First, can you get into the BIOS, and have it stay running?????

You can do an initial test, with MINIMUM parts installed.

Remove all expansion cards, disconnect the hard drive, and all other drives.

    The minimum configuration is:
    Motherboard
    CPU
1 stick of memory, (then try the other ones, one at a time)
Video card, or on-board, if you have it
    Power supply
    Nothing plugged into USB

If you can get it to boot, and stay running with that, start a new post, and we can go from there.

If you can get it to run, without the hard drive, either by disconnecting it, or booting from another device (ie, CD), I like to run Linux from a CD ROM, and test the system, by seeing if it works OK.

If Linux runs from CD, with no problems, then it is either a bad HD, or a corrupt, HD.

When you run Memtest86,you ARE booting from another device, also.

It could also be bad drivers. Like are you using video drivers from guru3d?

    ^^^^

That's worth checking into, if you loaded drivers, just before this happened.
That could stop it from booting.

My son, loaded the wrong Nvidia drivers, for his 6800, a while back, and it wouldn't boot

System restore actually worked for a change, and I was able to roll it back, then install the correct drivers.
