Weird windows problem

I was just checking my hdd partitions from within the administrative tools in the control panel. When i closed out of it my comp did a hard shutdown and then rebooted. I tried it again to make sure it wasnt some other process or whatever and it did it to me again! Anyone else have this problem?

This is a pretty fresh install of Win2k also, I put it on last night.

Never had that problem. Can you give the exact steps you did to create this occurrence?

I finished up my win2k install and all the critical updates and such. I plugged in my external hdd (usb) opened up the admin tools -> computer management -> disk management. After formatting the external, i hit the x to close the computer management tool and immediately computer powers off and then reboots, like i had hit the reset button on the case. I didnt install any new drivers, well the original drivers for mobo and video card, but it is still a fresh install...a little over a day old.

Are there any installation discs provided with this external HD? If you unplug the drive and go through the same motions what happens?

no installation discs for the external hdd, basically just plug and play. Everything reads fine on it i can play my music list and some captured .avi's off the external.
One bad log in my even viewer...except my secondary internal drive is nearing capacity...all the rest are successful windows updates
edit: the computer manager religiously causes that hard reboot, (when closing out of it actually) whether the external is plugged in or not

I wonder if you change the setting in "Start Up And Recovery" to not automatically restart if it would show anything. Go to Control Panel>System>(Start Up And Recovery)Settings>and uncheck ""Automatically Restart". Then make it fail again to see if it shows anything.
